Gurmeet Choudhary on breaking Ramayan image, Bollywood journey, OTT boom and life beyond TV fame
It is never easy for an actor to step out of a larger-than-life image like Lord Ram, a role that Gurmeet Choudhary played in the television epic Ramayan, which continues to be loved by audiences in India and abroad. Yet, Gurmeet has successfully reinvented himself on the big screen with films like Khamoshiyan, Wajah Tum Ho, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana and Paltan.
The 36-year-old actor is also a trained dancer and the winner of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 5. A martial arts enthusiast, he was also featured among the Top 10 Sexiest Asian Men Alive in 2017. In a conversation with SAURABH TANKHA, Gurmeet Choudhary speaks about his early dream of becoming an actor, breaking out of typecasting, working in films, the rise of OTT platforms in India, and his journey in the industry.
Gurmeet Choudhary on Why He Is Not Seen More Often On Screen
Gurmeet says he has always been clear about choosing quality-driven work over quantity. Since the beginning of his career, he has focused on working with strong scripts and creative teams. However, he admits that such choices often take time and patience.
He adds that in the film industry, visibility is important. According to him, actors must constantly keep working to remain relevant, otherwise they risk being forgotten. He shares that several projects are lined up, including the Zee Studios film The Wife, which was completed during the lockdown and released in March, along with a few independent music videos and upcoming film projects.
On Breaking the Ramayan Typecast
Talking about being typecast after playing Lord Ram, Gurmeet Choudhary says the challenge was real. Since Ramayan was his debut project at the age of 24, many people began associating him strongly with that image.
However, he says he consciously worked to break that perception by experimenting with roles in shows like Geet – Hui Sabse Parayi and Punar Vivah, and later participating in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. He believes that consistency and variety in roles helped him avoid being locked into a single image.
Gurmeet Choudhary on His Acting Journey and Early Dreams
Gurmeet shares that he wanted to become an actor since childhood. He recalls that the desire to perform was always there, even when he was very young. He believes destiny played a strong role in shaping his journey and ultimately guiding him towards acting.
On Struggle Without a Godfather
Speaking about his journey without industry connections, Gurmeet says it took him years of patience and persistence to reach where he is today. He reflects that his childhood dream of becoming a hero finally came true nearly three decades later.
On OTT Growth in India
Gurmeet Choudhary believes OTT platforms have already become a major part of the entertainment ecosystem in India. He says the medium has opened up more opportunities for actors, writers and creators, allowing them to explore diverse and meaningful content.
On Covid-19 Experience and Recovery
Gurmeet describes the Covid-19 lockdown phase as a period of transformation. He and his wife Debina were among the first from the industry to donate plasma after recovery. He says the experience made him more grounded and changed his perspective on life, helping him appreciate simplicity and resilience.
On Nepotism and Industry Pressure
Addressing insecurity and nepotism in the industry, Gurmeet says he prefers focussing on his work and spending time with close family and friends. He adds that talent should always be the primary criterion for opportunities, regardless of background. While he acknowledges nepotism exists, he believes support for deserving talent is equally important.
On Family Values and Upbringing
Gurmeet Chaudhary credits his parents, especially his mother, for shaping his values. He says they taught him respect, discipline and kindness, and to never say anything that could hurt others.
