Jute: India’s Golden Fibre Is Ready for a New Green Age

There was a time when jute was simply associated with gunny bags, grain sacks and the old-world mills of Bengal. Today, it is finding its way into technical textiles, sustainable fashion, infrastructure, packaging and a large number of lifestyle products.
India is at the centre of this transformation. The country remains the world’s largest producer of raw jute and accounts for about 75 per cent of global jute-goods production. No wonder it is called the country’s Golden Fibre.
In 2025-26, India produced 76 lakh bales of raw jute and 12.80 lakh metric tonnes of jute goods. The sector is not merely an industrial story; it supports nearly 40 lakh farming families and provides direct employment to around 3.70 lakh workers in organised mills and diversified jute units.
Jute is no more ‘just a traditional crop’. It has become an important part of India’s rural economy—and potentially one of its most useful answers to the global demand for greener materials.
From Bengal’s mills to a modern green economy
The story of Jute dates back to a long time in history – almost the third century BC. But, its transformation into a major commercial commodity came during the colonial period.
The British established jute mills in Bengal, turning the region into a major centre for cultivation and processing. Partition in 1947, however, dealt a severe blow to this industry. This is because nearly 80 per cent of the jute-growing areas went to East Pakistan, while most of the processing mills remained in India.
Following the acute shortage of raw material, in 1949, the government launched the “Grow More Jute” campaign, encouraging farmers to increase cultivation. The results were significant. Raw jute production more than doubled between 1951-52 and 1961-62.
Fast Forward to 2026. The industry is again at a turning point. But this time, the challenge is not about its production. The challenge is to make better jute products, create new markets and make the fibre relevant to all people out there.
A crop with an environmental advantage
Jute’s greatest strength is its simplicity. It grows quickly, is biodegradable and recyclable, requires relatively modest cultivation costs and has a large variety of uses. The fibre is strong, durable, breathable and capable of absorbing moisture. It also offers thermal and acoustic insulation and can be blended with other fibres.
Today, when concern over plastic waste is mounting, jute gets a natural advantage. However, the real opportunity is to take jute beyond conventional sacks and bags.
No wonder, Jute today is increasingly being explored for technical textiles, construction materials, agricultural applications, home products, fashion and packaging. And, how successfully we can do this will make all the difference.
When jute meets infrastructure
One of the most interesting examples of this transformation is jute geotextile. At first glance, using fabric in roads, embankments or riverbanks may sound unusual. Yet jute geotextiles can perform an important environmental function. They help stabilise soil, control erosion and support vegetation in vulnerable landscapes. Jute geotextiles can be used for slope protection, riverbank and canal protection, road construction and railway track formation. Further, they can also help regulate water movement and prevent soil migration in drainage systems.
And then there is their most important characteristic: they are biodegradable. Instead of leaving behind a permanent synthetic material, jute geotextiles gradually become part of the natural environment while helping establish vegetation and improve soil conditions.
This is precisely the kind of application that could redefine jute’s role in the decades ahead—not as an old-fashioned packaging material, but as a technical material for sustainable infrastructure.
From the farm to the fashion runway
Jute is also beginning to make an impression in fashion. The Indian contingent at the 2026 Commonwealth Games wore apparel made from jute-viscose blended fabric developed by the National Jute Board and designed by NIFT New Delhi.
The significance of that initiative goes beyond sportswear. For years, sustainability in fashion has often been discussed in terms of reducing synthetic fibres and finding renewable alternatives. Jute-viscose blends demonstrate that a traditional Indian fibre can be adapted to contemporary clothing.
Putting it on an international sporting platform also gives India’s jute industry something it has long needed: Visibility. If jute is to become a global sustainable-material brand, consumers must see it not merely as something functional, but as something desirable.
Jute leaves: An overlooked food
There is another, lesser-known side to the jute plant. Its leaves have traditionally been eaten as a vegetable in parts of Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. In Japan, they are recognised as a health food. The leaves contain vitamins, carotenoids, calcium, potassium and dietary fibre.
Research and technologies have also explored the use of jute leaves in antioxidant herbal drinks and healthcare products. So, the economic potential of jute isn’t its fibre alone.
The farmer remains at the heart of the story
Yet no discussion about the future of jute can ignore the farmer. Jute is predominantly grown by small and marginal farmers in eastern and north-eastern India. West Bengal remains the largest producer, followed by Bihar, Assam, Odisha and Jharkhand.
The crop generally takes around 100 to 110 days to mature and thrives in hot, humid conditions. Much of its cultivation is rainfed, making farmers particularly dependent on climatic conditions and market prices. Also, farmers need better seeds, improved cultivation practices, efficient retting and higher fibre quality.
The bigger challenge: diversification
Perhaps the most important word in the future of India’s jute industry is diversification. If jute remains dependent primarily on traditional packaging, its growth will inevitably be constrained. But if it can become a raw material for technical textiles, apparel, interiors, construction, agriculture and other specialised products, the possibilities become much larger.
There are certain government-backed programmes to push jute industry in this direction. The National Jute Development Programme supports cultivation, diversification, market development and entrepreneurship. Under the Jute Diversification Scheme, assistance is available for machinery, production centres, retail outlets and export-oriented activities.
The Jute Raw Material Bank is another important intervention, particularly for small producers, artisans, women’s self-help groups and MSMEs that may not have the purchasing power or supply networks of large mills.
Taking jute to the digital age
Perhaps the clearest indication that the industry is changing is the growing use of technology. JUTE-SMART has digitised the procurement and supply of jute sacking used for foodgrain packaging. By August 2026, more than 303 lakh bales of B.Twill jute bags had been procured through the platform, involving more than 20 state procurement agencies.
The system is now being expanded to digitise processes involving raw jute traders, importers and mills. Technology is also being used much earlier in the supply chain, thus helping jute economy connect the farm, the factory, the marketplace and technology.
The next chapter must be about value, not volume
India has already demonstrated that it can grow jute and manufacture jute goods at scale. The next challenge is more ambitious. Can India build a globally recognised jute brand? Or can an Indian jute product command a premium because it is sustainable, well designed and genuinely innovative? Can artisans and small enterprises capture more value instead of remaining at the lowest end of the supply chain? And can jute become part of everyday modern life rather than being remembered only when we think of grain sacks? These are the questions that will determine whether the Golden Fibre truly enters a new golden age.
The government has taken steps to strengthen cultivation, support farmers, modernise procurement, encourage diversification and expand markets. Industry and entrepreneurs now have an equally important role to play in turning those foundations into commercially successful products.
From Bengal’s historic mills to biodegradable geotextiles, from farmers’ fields to international sporting apparel, the ‘Golden Fibre’ Jute needs to build on its past, not abandon it. And then, it will help shape India’s greener future
