Noted author Amitav Ghosh’s latest book, The Nutmeg’s Curse: Parables for a Planet in Crisis, delves into the lasting impact of colonialism on the modern world—using the story of a single spice: nutmeg.

The book traces the journey of nutmeg (known as jaiphal in India) from its origins in the Banda Islands—a cluster of volcanic islands east of Java—to its spread across the globe through colonial expansion.

From Precious Spice to Colonial Exploitation

Before the 18th century, nutmeg was cultivated exclusively in the Banda Islands and was considered one of the most valuable commodities in the world. In fact, it was once worth more than gold by weight; a handful could buy an entire house. Beyond its culinary appeal, nutmeg possessed bactericidal, fungicidal, and insecticidal properties, making it essential for food preservation and even treatments during outbreaks like the Bubonic plague.

Unsurprisingly, European powers sought control over the lucrative spice trade. What began as trade soon turned into domination, as European merchants transitioned into colonial rulers.

The Human and Environmental Cost of Empire

As colonial forces took over, the people of the Banda Islands paid a devastating price. Ghosh highlights how the violent history of nutmeg reflects a broader colonial mindset—one that justified the exploitation of both human lives and natural resources.

The book argues that this extractive mindset did not end with colonialism but continues to shape modern geopolitics and environmental destruction. Amitav Ghosh links the story of nutmeg to today’s global climate crisis.

A Warning for the Future

Through vivid storytelling, Ghosh connects the brutal past of empire and racial capitalism with present-day ecological challenges. He presents alternative visions of coexistence—where humans live in harmony with nature rather than attempting to dominate it.

The Nutmeg’s Curse ultimately serves as a warning: unless humanity learns from history—particularly the tragic fate of the Banda Islands—we risk heading toward an irreversible, human-driven ecological catastrophe.
