Pune Startup Biosolutions Develops Non-Alcoholic Nano Silver Disinfectant for Hand and Surface Sanitisation

Team L&M

Pune-based startup Weinnovate Biosolutions, supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), has developed an innovative non-alcoholic, aqueous-based colloidal silver disinfectant using its proprietary NanoAgCide technology.

Designed for hand sanitisation and environmental surface disinfection, this advanced solution offers a safe and effective alternative to traditional alcohol-based sanitisers.

Non-Flammable, Chemical-Free Silver-Based Sanitiser

The NanoAgCide-based colloidal silver solution is:

  • Non-inflammable
  • Free from hazardous chemicals
  • Designed to reduce infection spread through contact transmission

This makes it particularly suitable for use in high-risk environments, helping protect healthcare professionals, frontline workers, and the general public.

How Nano Silver Technology Works

The effectiveness of the solution is attributed to silver nanoparticles, which are known to inhibit:

  • Viral negative-strand RNA synthesis
  • Viral replication and budding processes

Because of their ultra-small size (less than 100 nm), nanoparticles can interact closely with viruses such as COVID-19, enabling targeted antimicrobial action. This makes nanotechnology a promising tool in disinfection, diagnostics, and therapeutic applications.

Lab Testing, Scale-Up, and Production Plans

The colloidal silver solution has undergone laboratory testing, and the company has secured necessary test licenses. Early-stage production trials, including scale-up batches of up to 5 litres, have demonstrated consistent reproducibility.

Dr. Milind Choudhari, co-founder of Weinnovate Biosolutions, stated:

“We aim to manufacture at least 200 litres of colloidal silver solution per day to meet the growing demand for hand sanitisation and disinfection. Our goal is to help reduce infection spread and contribute to a safer, infection-free India.”

Nanotechnology’s Role in Infection Control

According to Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology:

“Nanoparticles are rapidly emerging as effective solutions in multiple COVID-19 applications, including therapy, diagnostics, disinfection, and imaging. Their nanoscale size and functional versatility make them highly relevant in addressing viral challenges.”
