Nana Patekar: Remembering the Powerhouse Actor Who Left an Indelible Mark on Indian Cinema
Life & More pays tributes to Nana Patekar

Some actors entertain us. Some move us. And then there are a few who leave an indelible mark on our hearts and minds. Nana Patekar was one who left a mark, however small his role was.
With his intense screen presence, unmistakable voice, raw emotions and extraordinary ability to breathe life into every character, Nana Patekar carved a place for himself that few actors can ever hope to occupy.
From the fire and conviction of Krantiveer to the haunting brilliance of Natsamrat, his performances were never merely about delivering dialogues. They were about making us feel, reflect and sometimes confront uncomfortable truths.
I first saw him as Major V S Chavan, in Prahaar- The Final Attack – the film he also directed. He was the formidable Army officer, who everyone feared and endeared at the same time. And he played the role exceptionally well. Prahaar provoked patriotism without any hyper-nationalism.
And this is something Nana practiced in his real life as well. He was one person who never needed glamour to command attention. His craft and sheer intensity did that for him in films and his honesty did that in real life.
His Work Out of Films
Who can forget the excepotional work he did for farmers and drought-affected communities. The Naam Foundation that he co-founded in 2015 with Marathi actor Makrand Anaspure, reflects a commitment to making a difference in society beyond the silver screen.
The Foundation undertakes water conservation works like desilting water bodies, rejuvenating canals and water harvesting works. It also provides long-term assistance to farmers in the form of education for children, and even financially help widows of martyrs. Whicb other actor in Bollywood has this kind of repertoire?
Today, it is not just Indian cinema that has lost a remarkable talent. It is scores of people for whom he was a father figure, who have lost their anchor in life.
Nana Patekar may have left us, but his characters, his powerful dialogues and the emotions he evoked will live on.
Thank you, Nana, for the stories, the performances and the memories, and the example of a life you lived. You will always be remembered.
Om Shanti. 🙏
