A borrowed mobile phone and a passion for dance were all that Surajit Tripura needed to chase his dream.
The 19-year-old from Sabroom village in Tripura has become the latest internet sensation after a video of his energetic dance performance went viral on social media. But behind the viral fame lies years of dedication, self-learning and perseverance.
Born to a farmer father and a homemaker mother, Surajit grew up in a modest household. His fascination with dance began when he was just five years old after watching his uncle perform. The experience left a lasting impression and sparked a passion that would shape his future.
Without access to a dance school or professional training, Surajit turned to YouTube to learn. He spent years watching dance videos on borrowed mobile phones, sometimes using his father’s device and at other times relying on neighbours.
“Whatever I have learnt is from YouTube videos,” says Surajit.
After completing his higher secondary education from Brajendra Nagar Higher Secondary School, he moved to Guwahati for work. Today, he is employed as a Guest Service Associate at Absolute Barbecues (AB’s) Restaurant.
Ironically, the first major stage for his talent was not a dance competition but the restaurant where he worked.
When the management at AB’s discovered his dancing skills, they encouraged him to perform at staff gatherings and special events. Soon, he began entertaining guests as well. His performances quickly became popular and started attracting attention across the city.
According to colleagues, some customers even visited the restaurant specifically to watch Surajit’s dance moves.
His life changed when one of those guests recorded a video of him dancing and shared it online. The clip soon went viral, turning the young restaurant employee into a social media sensation.
Overwhelmed by the response, Surajit says the attention still feels unreal.
“It all seems a dream. Some guests ask me to dance with them, others want to take selfies,” he says.
One of the most memorable moments of his journey came when his idol, Raghav Juyal, noticed him.
Surajit considers the popular dancer and television host his biggest inspiration.
“I like him a lot. His dancing skills are completely different from others, especially his slow-motion act,” he says.
The young dancer was thrilled when Raghav shared his viral video on Instagram.
“I never thought I would ever get recognition from my idol. This gesture has encouraged me even more to take my passion seriously so that one day I am able to share the stage with Raghav sir,” Surajit adds.
Despite his sudden popularity, Surajit remains focused on improving his skills and pursuing a professional career in dance. His viral success has already led to offers and invitations for dance reality shows.
The management at AB’s is also helping him explore opportunities that could give him a bigger platform and wider exposure.
For a young man who once borrowed phones simply to watch dance tutorials, the dream of becoming a professional dancer now feels closer than ever.
