Having worked on projects such as Brown Nation, Night of the Living Dead and Haunted, Naveen has built a reputation as a producer with a keen eye for storytelling. Today, he runs his own film and television production company in Chicago and is charting a new course as a director.

His directorial debut, The Last Victim, is a white-knuckle thriller set against the harsh landscape of the American Southwest. The film follows a group of modern-day outlaws dealing with the aftermath of a crime gone wrong. What unfolds is a chain reaction of violence, fuelled by isolation, disillusionment and warped ideologies.

The film boasts an impressive cast led by veteran actors Ron Perlman, known for Hellboy and Sons of Anarchy, and Ali Larter of Final Destination and Resident Evil fame. The ensemble also includes Ralph Ineson, Kyle Schmid, Dakota Daulby, Tahmoh Penikett and Camile Marie Legg.

For Naveen, moving from producing to directing required a major shift in mindset. While producers oversee every aspect of a project, directors are singularly focused on storytelling.

“As a producer, you focus on everything related to the project, whereas, as a director, you focus on only one thing — how to tell the story effectively,” he says.

He believes that while the two roles demand very different skill sets, they share one common requirement — the ability to execute at a high level. Once he decided to direct, he trusted his instincts and immersed himself in the process.

The experience of making The Last Victim reinforced some simple but important lessons. “Trust in the process. Be consistent. Show up daily and tackle what’s in front of you,” he says.

Naveen is also quick to point out that every filmmaker brings a unique perspective to storytelling. Rather than comparing himself with others, he focuses on continuous learning and collaboration.

“I think each filmmaker is unique. Each brings in a unique perspective to storytelling,” he says. “Over the years, I’ve learned and grown a lot from associating with many talented collaborators.”

Despite spending most of his career in the United States, Naveen remains connected to Indian cinema. He regularly watches Bollywood films, particularly those recommended by friends and colleagues.

“I like when I see a raw piece of storytelling or powerful performances,” he says. “Sometimes it’s simply the light, fun nature of the film that appeals to me.”

When it comes to the future of entertainment, Naveen believes digital platforms have fundamentally changed viewing habits worldwide.

“OTT is here to stay, globally,” he says. “Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and the rest are the new theatres. Everyone has the technology now to see content on a big screen with great sound in the comfort of their own homes.”

As a storyteller, he draws inspiration from a simple source — intuition. Asked where his ideas come from, his answer is brief but revealing: “My intuition.”

His definition of creativity is equally concise. For Naveen, being creative means “reaching into the unknown.”

He believes successful filmmakers share a few essential qualities. First, they must have something meaningful to say. Second, they need a clear vision and the ability to execute it. Third, they should possess a distinct voice. Finally, they must understand their audience.

With The Last Victim marking an important milestone in his career, Naveen is already looking ahead. Several projects are currently under consideration, including a revenge drama, a hyper-stylised rural thriller, a psychological horror film set in outer space, and a character-driven thriller.

For a filmmaker who has spent years helping bring stories to life behind the camera, directing appears to be a natural next step — one driven by instinct, storytelling and a willingness to explore the unknown.
