Abhimanyu Dassani: The Bold Debut of Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota Actor and His Journey Beyond Cinema

It is never easy for an actor to choose a challenging role in a debut film. Most newcomers prefer a conventional masala launch vehicle. But every once in a while, an actor chooses a path less travelled—and makes a lasting impression. Abhimanyu Dassani is one such name.

In his debut film Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota, he played a character suffering from a rare medical condition, earning attention for his commitment and unconventional choice. Son of veteran actress Bhagyashree, Abhimanyu has since carved his own space in Hindi cinema with his focused approach and willingness to experiment.

In a conversation with SAURABH TANKHA, the actor speaks about his intense preparation for his debut role, his journey into films, expectations from star kids, his love for sports cinema, and life beyond acting.

How challenging was it to play a character with a rare medical condition in your debut film?

Playing Surya in Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota was an eye-opening experience. It taught me a lot about myself as an actor and as a person. The process was long and detailed—we spent months researching the condition, reading discussions in online forums, and even speaking to a patient in Chicago who had a similar illness.

We also worked on the emotional aspect of the character, especially his childhood isolation, which shaped his innocence and limited emotional understanding. For the last three months, I isolated myself from social life, interacting only with my trainers and director to stay in character. It helped me understand my own insecurities and grow as an individual.

When did you decide to become an actor?

I initially explored business and other paths, but I realised I am happiest when I am creating something from scratch. A 9-to-5 routine wasn’t for me.

Back in 2009, I worked as an assistant director on Dum Maro Dum, which gave me my first real exposure to filmmaking. My parents were initially protective and didn’t want me to enter the industry, but once I was on set, I was drawn to its energy. I owe a lot to Rohan Sippy, who taught me the craft, and Abhishek Bachchan, who guided me during that phase. That experience ultimately pushed me towards acting.

Why are expectations so high from star kids?

It’s like branding. If a product from a known brand performs well, people automatically expect the next product to match or exceed it. Similarly, star kids are compared to their parents’ legacy.

People forget that every individual is different and should be evaluated on their own merit. The pressure comes from these comparisons, even though each journey is unique.

I would like to do a sports biopic or a sports fiction film as it motivates people, inspires them

Which genre would you like to explore?

I would love to do a sports biopic or sports-based fiction. Sports films are extremely inspiring—they highlight discipline, sacrifice, and dedication. I would love to be part of a story that motivates people in that way.

Will we see you in OTT projects?

Yes, I would definitely love to do an OTT project if I connect with the subject. OTT platforms are opening doors for stories that might never make it to theatres. I also enjoy watching such content and may pick something up soon.

Cooking is my first love. In fact, I fell in love with food before I fell in love with anything else

How did you spend your time during COVID-19?

It was a very reflective period. The world came to a standstill, which made me focus on acceptance and adaptability. I spent time with family, worked on myself, meditated, and even explored cooking. I also analysed my habits, strengths, and weaknesses, and tried to improve as a person.

What do you do when you are not “breathing films”?

I am a huge football fan and a die-hard Arsenal supporter. I enjoy music, fitness, long drives, and watching films. During the lockdown, I also discovered a passion for writing.

But my biggest love outside films is cooking. In fact, I fell in love with food before anything else. For me, it’s a combination of football, food, films, and fitness that keeps life balanced.
