The iconic Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has launched a spectacular multimedia projection mapping sound and light show to enhance the visitor experience and promote local tourism. The project’s creative team, Tricolor India Schauspiel Pvt. Ltd., selected cutting-edge Barco projectors to create vivid visuals across the historic jail facade.

A Historic Landmark Reimagined

Built during the late 19th century by the British, the Cellular Jail stands as a powerful symbol of India’s struggle for independence. Over the years, it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Andamans. The newly revamped show offers a dramatic upgrade over the conventional sound and light presentation, which previously included simple lighting effects and a basic audio narration.

World-Class Visuals and Sound

“The new show is a visual extravaganza, with an amalgamation of unique projection mapping techniques never experienced in one place. It is not only the visual appeal that sets this show apart but also the modern surround sound system, pinpointing audio references from all around and bringing alive the action from each surface,” says Rajiv Bhalla, Managing Director, Barco India, and Vice President, Large Video Wall Experience – APAC.

High-brightness laser projectors from Barco create immersive visuals, including vibrant animations, illustrations, and chroma-shot characters projected onto the jail’s V-shaped facade. Dynamic RGBW lighting seamlessly integrates with the projections, while strategically placed moving head lights add dramatic depth. A holographic projection enhances the panoramic view, giving visitors multiple layers of visuals in a 360-degree experience.

Innovative Storytelling with Nature

Even natural elements, such as a tree in front of the jail, are incorporated into the show. The “Speaking Tree” illusion synchronizes visuals with narration, creating a memorable storytelling experience for tourists.

Bringing History to Life

“This creative turnaround has brought new life to the show. The upgraded projection system and 16.2 surround audio provide a world-class experience, gaining newfound popularity with visitors,” says Binay Bhushan, Secretary, Andaman Tourism.

The Cellular Jail’s enhanced sound and light show not only brings history to life but also positions Andaman and Nicobar Islands on the global tourism map. Travelers can now witness the brutal colonial past, the resilience of India’s freedom fighters, and the architectural beauty of the historic prison in a modern, immersive format.

A Must-See Andaman Attraction

For tourists visiting the Andamans, the Cellular Jail projection mapping show is now a must-see experience, combining history, technology, and storytelling in an unforgettable way.
