Saurabh Tankha

It was at the 12th Web Baithak of Pracheen Kala Kendra last evening that Dr Troilee Dutta enthralled one and all with her sarod recital. Born in Kolkata in a culturally sound and music-loving family, Troilee is a first generation sarod player. Her younger sister, Moisilee, also plays the sarod.

Troilee was just five when started learning sarod from Pt Kamal Mallick and gave her first public performance the very next year, at six. โ€œI got intensive taalim from him for around 20 years. After his demise, I started learning from Pt Sanjoy Bandopadhyay and Pt Partho Sarathy. I still learn from them,โ€ she says. A graduate in English Literature from the University of Calcutta and a gold medallist post graduate in music from Rabindra Bharati University (RBU), Troilee has also done doctorate from RBU.

โ€œThough my parents (father Srijib is a retired employee of Punjab National Bank and mother Alpana is a homemaker) have no connection with sur and taal, they are true patrons of music. They have been a constant inspiration of my life along with my sister,โ€ shares the sarod player whose name Troilee is an amalgamation of the names of her two grandmothers, Pavitro and Shefalee.

Excerpts:

Where in the world do you find true connoisseurs of music?
Everywhere. Wherever I perform, I get immense love and blessings from the audiences.

Who has been the most inspirational person in your life and why?
My gurus, my parents, my sister and all my well-wishers who encourage me to do good work.

If not a musician, what would you have wanted to take up as a career?
I didnโ€™t think about it. May be a teacher as I like to teach music. Or may be a historian. History has always been my favourite subject.

Your most favourite performance and why?
Each of my performance is close to my heart as it gives me a new musical experience every time.

Your journey till nowโ€ฆ
The journey of a musician starts every day with new aspects, new thinking and new vision. The journey of music a never-ending process.
