A Counselling Session for parents of Nursery and Pre-Nursery students was held at Bhai Parmanand Vidya Mandir, Surya Niketan, Anand Vihar, Delhi last week. The workshop was organised by HT Pace in association with 6to16, the education wing of Life & More. The Resource Person for the same was Motivational Speaker Ashwani Kumar Sharma.

Sharma began with calling upon parents to send their child in neat and clean uniform. “Make sure that along with tiffin and water bottle, your child carries a handkerchief and a napkin daily.”

Talking to parents, Sharma spoke about the importance of spending time with children. “As parents you must have some quality time with your kids when they are back from school. This will help them share everything that has happened in the school,” he said.

Parents should adjust their daily routine according to the school timings of the kids, encourage the child to follow a certain time table for homework, playing and after gauging the child interest should encourage the kid to pick up a hobby and indulge in it daily.

“Sometimes, as parents we have to sacrifice our me-time for the sake of children and we must readily do it, without any regret. This is the first time that your child has left the cocoon of home for a totally different world. The more you be with them, the more they will be able to pour out their feelings,” said Sharma, adding that this will not only make the parent-child strong but also give the child confidence.

Resource Person Ashwani Kumar Sharma addressed the gathering

“If your child is not forthcoming in sharing her time at school, ask questions. Some kids are introverts and don’t talk on their own,” he said. Sharma also spoke about the importance encouraging kids to make new friends in the school.

Also, parents must check the school diary/almanac on daily basis to see if the teacher has made any comments. “Don’t think that once you have admitted the child to school, the entire responsibility is of teacher. Parents are equal stake-holders in development of kids, said Sharma.

Talking about Parent-Teacher meetings that are held in school, he remarked that it is advisable that PTMs are attended by both parents. Parents must be regular and punctual in here.

He also touched on packing of school bags. “In the initial days, pack the bag for your child in his presence so he learns how to do it, and after a month or so is able to do so on his own,” he said.
