Understanding Paramatma, Atma and Soul: A Sikh perspective!

Understanding Paramatma, Atma and Soul: A Sikh perspective!

Thia chart illustrates three key aspects of spiritual existence:
(1) the upper figure, (2) the middle figure, and (3) the lower figure. Together, they represent the journey of the soul toward higher consciousness, self-realisation, and divine union.

Paramatma: The Divine Presence Within All

The upper figure represents Paramatma, also known as Guru, Waheguru, or the I AM Presence—the omnipresence of God within every individual.

This divine presence exists in all of us, which means every human being has the potential to express and embody divine qualities. Since God encompasses both masculine and feminine energies, we experience Paramatma as Father-Mother God.

As written in the Guru Granth Sahib:
“Tu Mera Pita, Tu Hai Mera Maata…”
(O God, you are my father and you are my mother)

At the centre of this figure is the sacred Sikh symbol Ek-Onkaar, symbolising unity and the oneness of existence—affirming that Paramatma, Atma, and Soul are one.

The surrounding rings of colour represent powerful bands of positive energy, often understood as good karma accumulated across lifetimes.

The White Cord of Light: The Connection of All Beings

A white cord of light connects all three figures in the chart, symbolising the continuous flow of energy between the divine, the higher self, and the soul.

This connection reflects the idea that we are never separate from the divine—we are always linked through consciousness and energy.

Atma: The Higher Self and Inner Guide

The middle figure represents Atma, the Higher Self or Higher Mind—an immortal and permanent aspect of our being.

Atma can also be understood as higher consciousness or even visualised as the awareness of a deity or an ascended master. In this chart, it is depicted as the consciousness of Guru Nanak.

At an impersonal level, this higher energy is also known as Naam or Sat-Naam.

Atma carries a masculine polarity and shares a deep, intimate connection with the soul (jeev-atma), which carries a feminine polarity. The soul is a fragment of Atman that descended into the physical world to experience and master the material plane.

Over time, the soul may drift away from Atman. However, through awareness and spiritual effort, it can return.

Atma acts as a guide—mentoring the soul, helping it raise its vibration, and transform negative energy into positive energy.

As stated in the Guru Granth Sahib:
“Tu Mera Bhandhap, Tu Mera Bhrahatha…”
(O Atma, you are my relative and my brother)

The Threefold Flame: Love, Wisdom and Power

The presence of Paramatma manifests within the heart as a threefold flame (jyot).

This sacred flame consists of three colours:

  • Pink – representing divine love
  • Yellow – representing wisdom
  • Blue – representing power

Together, these qualities form the foundation of spiritual growth and mindfulness-based awareness.

The Soul’s Journey: From Karma to Moksha

The lower figure represents the soul, surrounded by protective white light symbolising purity.

The soul remains mortal until it purifies itself and reunites with Atma and ultimately with Paramatma.

We call this union Moksha, or liberation from the cycle of illusion and rebirth.

The soul is also enveloped in the powerful energy of Violet Flame. It transforms negative karmic energy into positive energy when invoked.

Through this transformation, the soul fulfils its ultimate purpose—to reunite with the divine.

As expressed in the Guru Granth Sahib:
“Tu Mera Rakha Sabni Thai, Ta Bho Keha Kara Jiyo”
(This oneness always protects me and frees me from fear)

Final Thoughts: Realising Oneness and Higher Consciousness

This spiritual framework reveals a profound truth: the soul, Atma, and Paramatma deeply interconnect. By raising awareness, purifying energy, and embracing mindfulness, one can move closer to self-realisation and divine unity.
