 Rahat Indori passes away at 70

Renowned Urdu poet and film lyricist Rahat Indori passed away this evening at Indore’s Aurobindo Hospital after suffering from two heart attacks. The 70-year-old poet had shared the news of testing Covid-19 positive on twitter Tuesday morning. “After initial symptoms of Covid-19, my corona test was done yesterday which came out positive. Pray that I defeat this disease as soon as possible,” Indori said in his last post. He also had 60 per cent pneumonia.

Born on January 1, 1950 in Indore as Rahat Qureshi to a cloth mill worker, Rafatullah Qureshi and his homemaker wife, Maqbool Un Nisa Begum, he did his higher secondary from Nutan School and later did his graduation from Indore’s Islamia Karimia College. In 1975, he passed his MA in Urdu literature from Bhopal’s Barkatullah University. For his thesis, Urdu Main Mushaira, he was awarded a PhD in Urdu literature from Bhoj University in 1985.

 

 

Known for lyrics of songs like M Bole toh and Dekh le (Munnabhai MBBS), Neend churai meri (Ishq), Chori chori jab nazrein mili (Kareeb), Dil ko hazaar baar roka roka roka (Murder), Bumbro bumbro (Mission Kashmir) among many others, Rahat Indori’s poem Bulati hai magar jaane ka nahin became a rage among youth earlier this year and went viral on various social media channels.
