 EC recognised for creating auxiliary polling stations for persons with disabilities

9th NCPEDP Mphasis Universal Design Awardsย presented

To commemorate those who have made impeccable contribution in actively promoting accessibility for persons with disability, the 9th edition of NCPEDP Mphasis Universal Design Awards was recently held in New Delhi. The awards were given away by Union Minister of State with independent charge, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) was among the winners and recognised for working towards creating auxiliary polling stations for persons with disabilities for the upcoming elections.

Other key awardees included Alim Chandani of Centumโ€GRO Initiative Skill Training Centre for the Deaf (New Delhi); Dhananjay Bhole, Academic coordinator, Centre for Inclusive Education and Accessibility, Savitribai Phule University (Pune); Harish Kumar, Founder, Ability on Wheels (Ahmedabad); Dr JS Arora, General Secretary, National Thalassemia Welfare Society (New Delhi); Tigmanshu Bhatnagar of IIT Delhi; Vishal Kapoor, Chief Design Officer, Future Enterprise Ltd (Mumbai); Orkids Foundation (New Delhi); Ezy Mov Solution Pvt Ltd (Mumbai); Amar Jain, Associate (Equity Capital Market); Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (Corporate Law Firm, Mumbai); Vishal Kumar Jain, Senior Manager, HR MIS & Analytics, TATA Motors (Mumbai): Diversity and Equal Opportunity Centre (Bengaluru) and National Association of the Deaf (New Delhi).

โ€œThis government recognises that it is only when each individual can truly enjoy โ€˜Ease of Livingโ€™ in our urban centres will Indiaโ€™s development story be deemed a success. The Divyang community is an integral part of our social fabric, and they too deserve access to the benefits of urban living,โ€ shared Puri at the event.

Som Mittal, Chairman, National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP), said, โ€œAccessibility is essential to empowerment and cuts across sectors. It can only be achieved if every ministry includes accessibility for persons with disabilities as an integral part of their work.โ€
