The simple act of breathing is far more powerful than we often realise. With every breath, the body’s cells generate energy. According to ancient Vedic wisdom—and even supported by modern scientific principles—every action has an equal and opposite reaction. In this context, the by-product of energy generation is the accumulation of toxins in the body.

In Sanskrit, these toxins are referred to as Ama. Over time, ama begins to corrode the cells, leading to wear and tear. The visible signs of ageing—greying hair, wrinkles, dull skin, fatigue, reduced strength, weak bones, and declining senses—are often attributed to the gradual buildup of these toxins.

Breathing and Performance: Lessons from Modern Science

You might be surprised to learn that optimal breathing techniques have even been linked to peak athletic performance. Reports suggest that during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the German football team used advanced monitoring systems to track heart rate and optimise physical efficiency.

Players were closely monitored, and when their heart rate exceeded a certain threshold, their training intensity was reduced. This helped prevent overexertion and improved overall performance—demonstrating how controlled breathing and physiological awareness can enhance endurance and results.

Right Breathing for a Healthy Mind and Body

Correct breathing patterns can:

  • Improve mental alertness
  • Enhance physical efficiency
  • Support stamina and endurance
  • Promote natural glow and vitality

On the other hand, faulty breathing patterns can accelerate physical and mental decline. Under stress, breath rate increases sharply. For example, during a heart attack or an asthma episode, the body gasps for oxygen, reflecting how critical breath control is for survival and health.

Ancient Indian Wisdom on Longevity and Vitality

Indian history and scriptures speak of individuals with extraordinary physical strength, mental clarity, and longevity—often attributed to disciplined living and controlled breathing practices.

Ancient sages and practitioners followed systems like Sanatan Kriya, which emphasise optimal breathing, energy balance, and inner awareness. These practices were designed to minimise physical deterioration and maximise vitality.

A Personal Encounter with Yogic Mastery

I once had the opportunity to meet a Himalayan yogi—commonly referred to as a babaji—who lived in extreme conditions with minimal food and clothing, even in sub-zero temperatures.

Despite appearing to be around 45–50 years old, his physical strength and energy levels were extraordinary—far surpassing even the fittest young individuals. Over a two-day journey through challenging mountain terrain, he remained alert, without food, sleep, or fatigue.

Such experiences inspire deeper exploration into the ancient sciences of breath and energy mastered by Indian sages.

Modern-Day Practice and Experiences

Practitioners associated with Dhyan Foundation claim significant transformations through disciplined breathing and yogic practices. Reported benefits include:

  • Improved physical fitness and body toning
  • Recovery from chronic health conditions
  • Enhanced mental clarity and confidence
  • Greater control over thoughts and emotions

While such experiences vary from person to person, they highlight the growing interest in integrating traditional practices with modern lifestyles.

Ancient Practices vs Modern Health Trends

Globally, there is a renewed shift towards ancient Indian wellness practices. However, ironically, many people continue to follow short-term diet and fitness trends promoted by the modern beauty and wellness industry.

From extreme dieting to surgical interventions like Bariatric Surgery, quick fixes often come with long-term consequences such as reduced strength, nutritional deficiencies, and premature ageing.

Similarly, rapid weight-loss diets may lead to wrinkled skin and accelerated ageing—raising questions about sustainability and overall health.

Why Breathing Right Matters

The way we breathe directly impacts our physical health, mental clarity, and overall longevity. Ancient Indian practices emphasise that mastering the breath is key to mastering life itself.

In a world driven by quick fixes, returning to simple, time-tested principles like correct breathing may hold the key to sustainable health, vitality, and inner balance.
