Understanding Brahman, Atman and Soul: A Hindu perspective!

Understanding Brahman, Atman and Soul: A Hindu perspective!

This chart illustrates three figures:
(1) the upper figure, (2) the middle figure, and (3) the lower figure. Together, these form a unified spiritual profile known as Brahman or Aham Brahmasmi—the realisation that the individual self is one with the divine.

This concept is also referred to as the I AM Presence or the omnipresence of God expressed individually within each person. It highlights that every human being carries the potential to express and manifest the divine qualities of Brahman as their God-Self.

Since the divine embodies both masculine and feminine energies, each individual can manifest a balanced expression of the Father (Spirit) and Mother (Matter) principles—symbolised as OM or AUM (Alpha and Omega within).

The Causal Body: Storehouse of Karma and Divine Energy

Surrounding Brahman are seven concentric spheres of light known as the Causal Body or the Body of First Cause.

These spheres represent accumulated spiritual energy and positive karma from past lives, which remain accessible to the soul. They act as a reservoir of divine light that can be drawn upon for growth, healing, and higher awareness.

The White Cord of Light: Connection Between Soul and Divine

A white cord of light connects all three figures, symbolising the continuous flow of energy between the soul, higher self, and divine source.

Through this connection, the energy stored in the Causal Body becomes available to the soul via the middle figure. With proper spiritual alignment and mindfulness, individuals can access this energy to transform their lives.

The Three Divine Functions: Creation, Preservation and Transformation

The three figures represent different aspects of divine consciousness:

  • Upper Figure (Paramatman – Power)
Represents the creative force of God, aligned with Brahma, the Creator.
  • Middle Figure (Paramatman – Wisdom)
Represents sustaining energy, aligned with Vishnu, the Preserver.
  • Lower Figure (Paramatman – Love)
Represents transformation through Shiva, the Destroyer, who helps transmute negative energy into positive energy.

Together, these reflect the cycle of creation, preservation, and transformation within the spiritual journey.

Atman: The Higher Self and Inner Guide

The middle figure represents Atman, your Higher Mind and inner voice of conscience, which is immortal.

Atman can also be visualised as the consciousness of a deity—depicted here as Vishnu Consciousness. It carries a masculine polarity and shares a deep connection with the soul (jeev-atman), which has a feminine polarity.

The soul is a fragment of Atman that descended into the material world to experience and master the energies of existence. Over time, it may drift away, but through awareness and spiritual practice, it can reunite with Atman.

As an inner guide, Atman mentors the soul, helping it raise its vibration and evolve in purity.

The Threefold Flame: Power, Wisdom and Love

The presence of Paramatman resides in the heart as a threefold flame (Jyoti).

This flame consists of three colours:

  • Blue – Power (Brahma)
  • Yellow – Wisdom (Vishnu)
  • Pink – Love (Shiva)

These three divine qualities form the foundation of spiritual awakening, mindfulness, and inner transformation.

The Soul’s Journey: From Karma to Moksha

The soul remains mortal until it purifies itself, raises its vibration, and reunites with Atman and ultimately with Paramatman.

This process leads to Moksha, or liberation from the illusions of Maya and the cycle of rebirth.

Violet Agni: Transforming Negative Karma into Positive Energy

The lower figure represents the soul, surrounded by protective white light and the powerful energy of Violet Agni (Violet Flame).

When invoked, this energy helps transform negative karmic patterns into positive energy. Through this process, the soul progresses toward its ultimate goal—transcending limitations and achieving spiritual victory.

Final Thoughts: Realising Your Divine Potential

This spiritual framework emphasises that every individual holds the potential to realise their divine nature. By understanding the connection between Brahman, Atman, and the soul, one can move toward higher consciousness, self-realisation, and inner peace.
