Taiwan’s Holiday for Healing: Mountain Tourism and Post-COVID Travel

Team L&M

Healing is not an overnight process—it requires time, experiences, and connection with nature. Taiwan is offering a three-fold initiative to promote hope, wellness, and tourism, making it a perfect destination for post-COVID travelers.

Earlier in the year, Taiwan declared 2020 as the Year of Mountain Tourism, encouraging visitors to explore over 275 mountain peaks above 3,000 meters. From serious mountaineers to casual holidaymakers, Taiwan provides diverse experiences that allow travelers to immerse in nature without overcrowding.

Taiwan’s Three-Phase Tourism Reopening Plan

To welcome international tourists in the latter half of the year, Taiwan has implemented a three-phase reopening plan:

  1. Phase 1 – Pandemic Prevention & Confidence Building: Tourism guidelines and quick response plans in case of an outbreak are in place. Training courses for travel professionals help visitors travel with confidence.
  2. Phase 2 – Tourism Reintroduction: A budget of US$33 million supports local FAM tours, connecting homestays, specialty outlets, attractions, shopping, and more. Up to 300,000 participants from the tourism sector will benefit from relief subsidies.
  3. Phase 3 – International Tourism: After successful domestic implementation, Taiwan will welcome international visitors, offering a safe and immersive travel experience.

Mountain Experiences in Taiwan

Alishan National Scenic Area

A must-visit for nature lovers, Alishan offers wilderness, waterfalls, tea plantations, and scenic forest railways. The forest railway to Fenqihu takes visitors through tunnels, bridges, and panoramic mountain views. Shoujhen Temple, Taiwan’s highest elevation temple, along with 10,000 miniature Buddhas, offers spiritual and cultural delight. Local F&B stalls provide a taste of authentic Taiwanese cuisine.

Yangmingshan National Park

Near Taipei, Yangmingshan is famous for floral blossoms, hot springs, and Seven Star Mountain, a dormant volcano. Trails like Xiaoyoukeng lead through steaming vents and sulfur deposits, offering the best views of Taipei and immersive outdoor experiences.
