Vitamin D Deficiency in India: Causes, Symptoms, and Remedies

Team L&M

Cases of Vitamin D deficiency are rising rapidly across India, affecting men, women, and children irrespective of age, religion, or background.

A recent survey by ASSOCHAM in Delhi-NCR revealed that around 88% of Delhi residents have low Vitamin D levels. Worryingly, most people are unaware of the deficiency and its harmful effects on overall health.

Health Risks of Low Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to poor bone mineralization, causing:

  • Rickets in children
  • Osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults

Other associated symptoms include:

  • Chronic muscle pain and spasms
  • Low energy levels
  • Depression

According to the ASSOCHAM study, Vitamin D is not only vital for bones but also plays an important role in heart, brain, and immune system function.

Causes of Vitamin D Deficiency

About 85% of Vitamin D deficiency is due to insufficient sunlight exposure, often caused by spending long hours in air-conditioned offices or indoors.

Ways to Combat Vitamin D Deficiency

  1. Sunlight Exposure – Regular exposure to sunlight helps the body produce Vitamin D naturally.
  2. Vitamin D-rich Foods – Include fish, beef liver, egg yolks, almond milk, soy milk, orange juice, cereals, and mushrooms in your diet.
  3. Supplements – Vitamin D supplements can help restore normal levels under medical guidance.
  4. Lifestyle Changes – Spend more time outdoors, avoid prolonged air-conditioned environments, and maintain a balanced diet.

ASSOCHAM Medical Camps for Awareness

As part of CSR activities, the ASSOCHAM Healthcare Committee, in association with PSRI Hospital, is organizing free medical camps in Delhi. Participants can avail comprehensive check-ups and counselling to detect and manage Vitamin D deficiency effectively.

Vitamin D deficiency is a preventable and treatable condition, but awareness and proactive lifestyle changes are key to maintaining strong bones, energy, and overall health.
