WORLD EARTH DAY Adopt a sustainable approach to elevate your interiors

Team L&M

As the world increasingly values efficiency and sustainable living, Aashita Chadha, Co-founder and Chief of Culture & Strategy at The KariGhars, emphasizes that sustainability is now a fundamental aspect of all interior design projects. To create truly impactful work, she believes that this philosophy of sustainability should be integrated into every single aspect of the design process. Hereย  Chadha share some of her favorite sustainable design tips for elevating the interiors in a way that is kind to the planet. Read on:

Choose sustainable fabrics

When it comes to fabrics, opt for sustainable options like organic cotton, linen, and hemp. These materials are created without harmful pesticides and herbicides, making them better for the environment and your health. Furthermore, I encourage using vintage or upcycled fabrics as a means to add a distinctive and environmentally-conscious flair to the living space.

Use recycled and reclaimed materials

Recycled wood and recycled glass

Incorporating materials that are recycled or reclaimed in home design is a great way to practice efficiency in home design. By using materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill, one can help reduce waste and minimize the environmental impact on our homes. Reclaimed wood, for instance, can add character and warmth to a space while also being more durable and cost-effective than new materials. Similarly, recycled glass can create stunning and unique features like countertops or similar decorative accents. Using this kind of material palette can help reduce the demand for new resources, such as timber or raw metals, which can have a significant impact on the environment when extracted and processed and thus be an effective way to create a more sustainable and environmentally-conscious living space.

Encourage the use of energy-efficient windows

Energy-efficient windows are a powerful tool for reducing energy consumption, cutting down on heating and cooling bills, and lowering carbon emissions. By blocking unwanted heat gain or loss, they create a comfortable living environment while eliminating the need for artificial lighting. This sustainable design choice also has the added benefits of reducing financial costs and promoting better health for homeowners.

Use plants to purify air

Plants not only add beauty to your home but also have the ability to purify the air by removing toxins and pollutants from the air, creating a healthier living environment. Plantations like spider plants, snake plants, or peace lilies act as natural humidifiers, regulating indoor humidity levels, reducing the need for energy-consuming electric humidifiers, and improving indoor air quality. In summary, incorporating plants into interior design not only has practical benefits but also promotes a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Upcycle furniture and decor

Using the process of upcycling extends the life cycle of furniture and decor, minimizing waste and contributing to a circular economy. It largely involves using environmentally friendly materials and techniques, such as repurposing wood or using natural dyes, which makes a negligible contribution to the environmental impact of production. The strategy further adds a unique and personalized touch to the home creating a more individualized and meaningful living space.

Sustainable interior design is essential for building healthy, comfortable, and eco-friendly homes. By making conscious choices, we have the power to create a better future for both ourselves and the environment, and sustainable interior design is a powerful tool that can help us achieve that goal at the individual level. So let’s incorporate these design principles into our homes to make a positive impact on the planet and its resources.
