As The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa, New Delhi completes 25 years of its journey, we speak to its Director Vipul Gupta about milestones, evolution, and the future of luxury hospitality in India.

In the Indian hospitality landscape, how significant is this 25-year milestone?

For me, the most rewarding part of this journey is the successful completion of 25 years of The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa, New Delhi. This milestone holds immense significance as I have been closely involved in every stage—from conceptualising and launching the hotel to building it as a strong hospitality brand, managing revenue, and overseeing its transformation through various upgrades.

Over the years, I have learned to engage with people from diverse backgrounds. The journey has been both challenging and fulfilling, and I am proud that everyone associated with the hotel—our guests, employees, stakeholders, and partners—feels connected to our brand.

What was the original vision when the hotel first opened in 2000 and has that vision changed over time?

We continue to follow the mission, vision, and core values established 25 years ago, which remain central to our growth and culture. The hotel’s founder, Late Mr. Satya Pal Gupta, envisioned creating a legacy focused on continuous improvement for both guests and employees.

His vision transformed The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa into one of India’s leading standalone luxury hotels, known for quality, innovation, and sustainability. Today, we proudly carry forward his legacy while consistently upgrading our technology, amenities, and services to meet evolving guest expectations and industry standards.

What differentiates The Metropolitan Hotel & Spa from other hotels in Delhi?

Our luxury hotel enjoys a prime location on Bangla Sahib Road in Connaught Place, New Delhi’s key business and shopping hub. It offers easy access to corporate offices, financial centres, embassies, ministries, and major exhibition venues.

We combine modern luxury with a distinct Indian identity. From our cuisine and interiors to guest experiences, we showcase the rich cultural diversity of India, making us an ideal destination for international travellers seeking both comfort and authenticity.

Guest preferences would surely have changed in the last 25 years. How has the hotel adapted to these changes?

Today’s guests seek personalised and memorable experiences rather than standardised offerings. In our food and beverage segment, we focus on innovative menus, experimental beverages, and unique dining experiences curated by our expert chefs.

For room service, we prioritise speed, hygiene, temperature control, attention to detail, and intuitive, customised service to enhance guest satisfaction.

Unlike large hotel chains with rigid loyalty programmes, we leverage our flexibility as an independent hotel to offer immediate value, personalised offers, and creative guest engagement strategies. Ultimately, our goal remains to enhance guest experience and encourage repeat visits.

How do you ensure a balance between tradition and modernity in design and services at the property?

We offer a range of accommodations including Deluxe Rooms, Club Rooms, and Suites, combining luxury, comfort, and personalised services. Modern amenities such as high-speed Wi-Fi, electronic safes, and well-equipped rooms ensure a seamless stay experience.

Our dining experiences are a highlight. We introduced Japanese cuisine to India 25 years ago with Sakura, setting new benchmarks. Chutney, Bar + Tandoor serves authentic Indian cuisine with a contemporary touch, while Zing, our all-day dining restaurant, offers global cuisine in a vibrant setting.

Our chefs bring innovation while maintaining authenticity, and the hotel’s design reflects a modern yet warm and intimate ambiance that distinguishes it from other luxury hotels in Delhi.

How do you foster a culture of excellence and consistency among your team?

Our HR team actively gathers and analyses employee feedback, conducts regular training, reviews, and appraisals, and implements engagement programmes to ensure satisfaction and productivity. A healthy work-life balance remains a key priority for us.

How has technology transformed operations or guest interactions at the hotel?

The hospitality industry today is driven by changing guest expectations, including demand for personalised experiences, sustainable tourism, and “bleisure” travel.

We are adapting to technological advancements such as AI, chatbots, and digital tools to enhance guest interactions before, during, and after their stay. Platforms like TripAdvisor and social media have increased transparency and helped improve service quality.

However, we continue to prioritise direct guest interaction, feedback analysis, and continuous improvement, as guest satisfaction and repeat visits remain our ultimate benchmarks of success.

What’s next for the hotel in terms of expansion, innovation, or new experiences for guests?

We are actively exploring opportunities to expand our brand and sub-brands in the near future. While the hotel underwent a major transformation during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, we continue to upgrade and evolve based on current demands.

Going forward, we aim to strengthen our position in Delhi’s competitive luxury hospitality market while maintaining our niche appeal. We will also introduce curated experiences such as spa events, food festivals, musical evenings, and fashion showcases to enhance guest engagement and attract new audiences.
