It was just a fortnight ago that www.lifeandmore.in interviewed Roopa Rao, the writer-director of country’s first same-sex web series, The “Other” Love Story. And mentioned about the talented filmmaker’s maiden feature length film in Kannada, Gantumoote, having its world premiere at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2019 on May 11.
So, it did. And guess what! The movie not only won the Best Screenplay Award at the Festival but was also officially selected by the Ottawa Indian Film Festival Awards.
Gantumoote (baggage) is an intense coming off age, high school drama set in Bangalore in the 1990s. It is a tale narrated from a girl’s perspective, which is fairly rare for Indian cinema, more specifically to Kannada cinema. It is a story of her struggles in understanding herself and the ever-changing world around her, educational pressures, bullying, competition over marks – all of it wrapped up in transcending journey of first love.
