Rajkumar Singhajit Singh, one of the most revered figures in the world of Indian classical dance, breathed his last on November 19, 2024, at the age of 93, at his residence in Delhi. Renowned for his unparalleled contributions to Manipuri dance forms, including Raslila and Pung Cholom, he was celebrated as a guru, performer, and cultural ambassador who dedicated his life to preserving and promoting the rich heritage of Manipuri arts. His demise marks the end of an era, leaving a profound void in the world of classical dance and Indian culture.
Born in 1931 in Manipur, Rajkumar Singhajit Singh grew up amidst the vibrant cultural traditions of the northeastern state. He was drawn to the arts from an early age, influenced by the deeply spiritual and aesthetically rich traditions of Manipuri dance. The Raslila, a devotional dance form celebrating the life of Lord Krishna, and the vigorous, acrobatic drum dance Pung Cholom became his signature styles. Rajkumar Singhajit Singh ji was my movement teacher at the National School of Drama. He was a very respected guru and expert of Manipuri dance form. He also taught us Sword Fighting. He played a very important role in my career as an actor. A soft spoken man with great determination to impart knowledge. He was extremely proud of my becoming a famous actor. Deeply saddened by his passing away. My condolences to his family, friends and thousands of his students all over the world. Om Shanti.”

The Department of Art and Culture, Manipur, mourned his passing and held a condolence meeting to honor his memory. During the gathering, Commissioner M. Joy Singh and Director of Art and Culture K. Dinamani Singh paid heartfelt tributes to the legendary artist. Observing two minutes of silence, the department acknowledged the immense loss to the state and the world of classical arts. Director K. Dinamani Singh remarked on Singhajit’s key role in promoting “Sankirtana of Manipur” at an international level and emphasized that his contributions to Manipuri art and culture would be remembered for generations to come.
The passing of Rajkumar Singhajit Singh is an irreparable loss to the world of Indian classical dance and the cultural heritage of Manipur. His work ensured that Manipuri dance, with its delicate movements and spiritual undertones, continues to thrive and inspire.
