Harness the Power of Self-Expression for Emotional Intelligence and Personal Growth
Rashmi Singh
To meet the demands of the complex world we are currently living in, individuals today are tech-savvy, efficient, organized, highly skilled, and competitive.
We have a goal and a plan to make it happen. So, what holds us back? It is the challenges that catch us off-guard, the unforeseen experiences that are difficult to process, the overwhelming emotions we struggle to address, and the social dilemmas we can’t escape.
Even academically trained professionals with objective crisis management schemes often struggle with subjective matters of the self. True success depends on self-work, adaptability, and creative collaboration.
Life, a Multi-layered Narrative
Life is not a series of discrete events but a multi-layered narrative, where experiencing and expressing emotions are essential. Emotions are evolved functional states that regulate our thoughts and behavior, making emotional intelligence one of the most critical 21st-century skills, often considered more important than IQ.
Imagine flying the plane of your ambition with a perfect landing plan, but suddenly the rational pilot takes a backseat, and the emotional co-pilot becomes the captain.
When exposed to threatening stimuli, higher executive brain functions are overridden by primitive emotional reflexes. Developing healthy coping mechanisms and engaging in creative expression are crucial for navigating these socio-emotional upheavals and achieving personal growth.
Begin Now
Where do we begin? The preliminary step is simple: engage in self-expression. Mental health practitioners have long advocated sharing and talking, but it is time we move beyond words.
Writing, painting, dancing, singing, drawing, sketching, filmmaking, and acting are the wings upon which expression has flown for ages. The art of creative expression is inherently humanistic.
Pen down your thoughts in a private journal, stories, or poems, or use nonverbal modalities to engage with your personal narrative. Externalizing thoughts allows for observation at a distance.
Tap Into Your Creativity
When we tap into our creativity, multiple skills automatically come into play—flexibility, higher emotional thresholds, improved cognitive abilities, and a broadened perspective.
Self-expression acts as a catalyst for personal growth, helping us communicate our needs, identify triggers, understand shortcomings, and map maladaptive pathways.
When we follow awareness with action, we suppress undesirable patterns and accelerate desirable ones.
Expression bridges the emotion-cognition gap, facilitates rational decision-making, boosts confidence, and nurtures individuality. Since our thoughts, actions, and feelings intertwine neurobiologically, conscious expression synchronizes them and ensures that our flight of ambition lands successfully.
