Understanding Yog and the Power of Elements on Guru Purnima
Ashwini Guruji
Yog is the sum total of creation. Its science unfolds in stages—first through the elements, then through consciousness, and finally through divinity. This process transforms a normal being into a super being.
Understanding the elements and their properties, and using them to bring changes in yourself and your surroundings, is a basic siddhi of Yog under the guidance of a guru.
The Five Elements: Panch Mahabhutas
Everything in creation is made of five elements, called Panch Mahabhutas:
- Prithvi (Earth) – Provides support and structure to the body.
- Jal (Water) – Governs elimination and procreation.
- Agni (Fire) – Supplies energy to the body.
- Vayu (Air) – Transports nutrients throughout the body.
- Akash (Ether) – Promotes growth and development.
Even though we cannot see these elements in the body, they control its daily functioning. Changes in the body—such as ageing, illness, strength, or glow—occur due to transformations of these elements.
The Role of the Moon and Som on Purnima
On Purnima (full moon day), the moon energy awakens all elements. The moon element, called Som, is the nectar of life. It nourishes and enhances all other elements.
In the human body, we call this nectar Bindu Visarg. Practitioners experience it during deep dhyan (meditation). The Agya Chakra (the seat of the Guru) releases Bindu Visarg, and the practitioner holds it at the Throat Pit (Vishuddhi Chakra). Sanatan Kriya explains techniques to channel this energy effectively.
When controlled, Som energy provides:
- A radiant glow
- Increased attraction
- Slowed ageing
Guru Purnima: Peak Energy and Elemental Awakening
On Guru Purnima, the moon’s energy is at its peak. Generation of nectar (Som) is highest, and the elements are most volatile.
A guru channels this energy, enabling the practitioner to awaken internally. When the guru activates the moon element, maximum energy flows through the body, creating profound awakening and transformation.
Awaken to Reality Through the Elements
To truly understand the elements, the workings of creation, and the energy that drives it, one must practice under a guru.
Guru Purnima is the most auspicious day to:
- Channel the energy of Som
- Awaken your consciousness
- Experience the maximum benefits of the elements
- Understand the energy behind creation
Through guided practice, Yog under a guru enables you to align with cosmic energies, enhance health, and experience spiritual growth.
