The Hyderabad-based Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation has come up with an app for checking the breast health. This the first app in the world dedicated to breast health. Called ABC of Breast Health, this app is available in 12 Indian languages viz English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya and Assamese.
Developed by oncologist Dr Raghu Ram, CEO of the Foundation and president of the Association of Breast Surgeons of India, the app aims at helping common people with all the knowledge about the disease. The disease, curable if detected and treated in early stages, often gets fatal as it goes undetected due to lack of knowledge among people and the many myths associated with it. The app will not only tell everything about this lifestyle disease but it also contains a specific section titled ‘Myths and Facts’, which aims to dispel many common misconceptions associated with breast health.
The app is available in both iOs and Android versions. One can download it from Google Play and Apple for free. Once download, the user will get daily notifications about the disease.
The Foundation has also requested the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare portal of the Union Government to help the public at large. “I have submitted a proposal to the Ministry to consider incorporating the app in the government’s health portal for empowering people on a larger scale all over the country. This is under consideration,” said the Foundation CEO.
The app was launched by filmstar Amitabh Bachchan. During his address, he said, “The opportunity to raise quality of life and healthcare through digitalisation is on the cusp of a third wave of IT adoption. It seems that ‘now’ is the time for us to go all in, on digital strategies. Understanding what patients want from digital healthcare and the best way to give it to them is vital.” The app also contains a specific section titled ‘Myths and Facts’, which aims to dispel many common misconceptions about breast health. Notifications about the same are sent to the user, on a daily basis, after the app is downloaded.
