Tinder Launches “Blind Date” Feature to Help Gen Z Connect Beyond Photos
Team L&M
Tinder has introduced a new Blind Date feature in its Explore section, bringing back the classic charm of blind dating for the modern era. Designed to prioritize conversation over photos, this feature gives members a fresh, low-pressure way to create meaningful human connections.
Blind Date: Putting Personality First
The Blind Date experience pairs users before allowing them to view each other’s profile or photos, making conversation the first impression. Members answer a short series of icebreaker questions and are paired based on commonalities. They then engage in a timed chat, discovering shared interests through prompts such as:
“It’s OK to wear a shirt ____ times without washing it”
“I put ketchup on ____”
After the timer ends, users can choose to like each other’s details, revealing profiles only if there’s a mutual match, or move on to the next pairing.
Survey Insights: Why Gen Z Loves Blind Dates
Before launching the feature, Tinder conducted an online survey of young Indians, revealing:
77% found blind dating ‘exciting’
59% found it ‘thrilling’
63% wanted to try blind dates but didn’t know how to set them up
41% preferred swiping based on bios and interests rather than photos
The survey also highlighted popular first date activities:
Dinner at a restaurant – 43%
Long walk in the city – 28%
Additionally, Gen Z valued sense of humor (30%) and authenticity (15%) above all when meeting someone new.
A New-Age Dating Experience
Kyle Miller, VP of Product Innovation at Tinder, explained:
“We wanted to recreate the anticipation and excitement of classic blind dates for today’s generation. Blind Date lets conversation introduce personality first, without photo-based preconceptions, offering a fun and banter-based way to create real connections.”
Blind Date is part of Tinder’s Fast Chat suite, which uses innovative prompts and games to help members connect faster and more meaningfully. By prioritizing personality, the feature reflects modern dating habits and empowers users to meet like-minded partners in a relaxed, interactive environment.
