India’s urban mobility landscape is evolving rapidly, with cities focusing on sustainable transport, shared mobility, and inclusive infrastructure. According to the Ease of Moving Index (EoMI) – India Report 2022 by the OMI Foundation, cities like Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad rank highest for ease of moving in India.
They are closely followed by Mumbai and Coimbatore, highlighting strong progress in urban transport systems in India.

Mumbai residents are among the lowest spenders on monthly transport
Kolkata shows the highest adoption of shared mobility
Ahmedabad leads in willingness to adopt electric vehicles (EVs)
Ludhiana records the highest public transport usage among women and non-binary groups
Chennai ranks among cities with the best cycling infrastructure in India
These findings highlight the growing importance of sustainable mobility solutions and inclusive transport systems across Indian cities.
About the EoMI 2022 Report
The report was launched by Kunal Kumar, Joint Secretary and Mission Director of the Smart Cities Mission, along with Shombi Sharp.
The Ease of Moving Index 2022 is based on:
- 50,488 survey respondents
- 220 focus group discussion participants
- Government and secondary data sources
The report emphasises “Mobility for All”, focusing on accessibility, inclusivity, and efficiency in urban transport systems.
Top Performing Cities in Urban Mobility
The report identifies several cities leading across different mobility parameters:
Kochi shows the highest potential for active and shared mobility
Bhubaneswar offers the most seamless mobility experience
Aizawl ranks highest in clean mobility
Jabalpur has the lowest mobility expenditure
Kolkata leads in shared mobility adoption
Pune stands out for its inclusive mobility ecosystem
Growing Focus on Sustainable Mobility in India
According to Gautam Bambawale, Managing Trustee of OMI Foundation:
Urban centres are key drivers of economic growth, and efficient mobility systems are essential for unlocking their full potential.
He emphasised that India’s journey towards becoming a $10 trillion economy depends on sustainable, inclusive, and efficient urban mobility systems.
Harish Abichandani added that active and shared mobility, combined with technological innovation, will transform how Indian cities move.
Urban Mobility Trends: 2018 vs 2022
The report also compares mobility trends over time:
- Public transport usage increased in 9 out of 18 cities
- Comfort perception improved in 15 cities
- Cleanliness ratings improved in 12 cities
Additionally, walking and cycling are emerging as key modes for first- and last-mile connectivity. Improved infrastructure has made these options safer and more accessible.
