Rising Pet Care Trends in India: Insights from Supertails Survey

Team L&M

A recent survey by Supertails.com, a full-stack, tech-enabled pet care startup, reveals fascinating insights into pet parenting in India. The survey, conducted with over 500 Indian pet owners, highlights pandemic-driven trends, spending habits, and the growing influence of Gen Z and Millennials in the pet care market. The report is titled “Pawrents” and sheds light on evolving expectations from the pet care industry.

Metro Cities Lead in Pet Care Spending

  • Bangalore: 55% of pet owners spend Rs 3,000 or more per month.
  • Mumbai: 52% spend Rs 3,000 or more per month.
  • Delhi: 40% of pet parents spend between Rs 1,500-3,000 monthly.

The data shows a strong willingness among urban pet owners to provide premium nutrition, healthcare, and a nurturing environment for their pets.

Pet Parenting Adoption Rises Among Gen Z and Millennials

Post-pandemic, the highest pet adoption is seen among Gen Z (48%), followed by Millennials (44%). Rapid urbanization, nuclear families, and the trend of pet humanization have contributed to this rise in first-time and new-age pawrents.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 Cities Catching Up

Interestingly, Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are narrowing the gap with metros. About 47% of pet parents in smaller cities spend Rs 1,500-3,000 per month on their pets. Meanwhile, over 39% of metropolitan pet owners spend more than Rs 3,000 monthly.

Growing Demand for Digital Pet Care

As first-time pawrents, many owners rely heavily on online information and local veterinary guidance.

  • Gen Z: 93% feel there isn’t enough credible online information for pet care.
  • 72% of Gen Z pawrents want online vet consultations for easier access.
  • Tier 2 & Tier 3 cities: 73% face challenges accessing veterinary services online.
  • 67% of all pawrents identify a major industry gap: emergency vet consultations.
