Women’s Health: The Cornerstone of Every Home

Women’s Health: The Cornerstone of Every Home

Women are often described as the backbone of families and communities. However, their strength is deeply rooted in one essential factor — good health. When women prioritise their health, they strengthen not only themselves but also the families and societies they nurture.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, it is important to recognise that women’s health is the cornerstone of every home. The theme “Give to Gain” reminds us that investing in a woman’s health ultimately benefits the entire family.

Why Women Often Neglect Their Health

In the daily rush of responsibilities, many women tend to put their own health last. This is particularly common among working women in demanding sectors such as IT, where long working hours and high stress levels leave little time for personal well-being.

Recent observations suggest that working women report a higher incidence of health issues than homemakers. A major contributor to this trend is the modern lifestyle — long hours of sitting, limited physical activity, and easy access to fast food.

These habits are leading to several health concerns among women today, including:

  • Infertility

  • Irregular menstrual cycles

  • Reproductive health disorders

  • Joint and back pain

  • Reduced mobility

  • Hormonal imbalances

Preventive Measures for Women’s Health

Preventive care plays a crucial role in maintaining long-term health. Women can safeguard their well-being by adopting a few essential practices:

Regular Health Check-ups
Routine screenings help monitor heart health, reproductive health, and detect lifestyle-related diseases at an early stage.

Balanced Diet and Exercise
A nutritious diet combined with regular physical activity strengthens the body and supports mental well-being.

Mental Wellness
Managing stress, getting adequate sleep, and taking time to relax are essential for emotional and hormonal balance.

Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Maintaining proper nutrition, limiting unhealthy beverages, and avoiding harmful habits contribute significantly to overall health.

Women’s Health Across Different Life Stages

A woman’s health needs evolve at every stage of life. Awareness and timely care can help prevent complications and ensure a healthier future.

Childhood

Health awareness should begin early. Along with routine vaccinations, the Rubella vaccine plays a critical role in preventing congenital defects if infection occurs during pregnancy later in life.

The HPV vaccine, now available free of cost through government initiatives, helps protect against cervical cancer.

Parents should also encourage girls to participate in sports such as:

  • Tennis

  • Badminton

  • Swimming

  • Outdoor activities

Schools should ensure at least one hour of daily physical activity to prevent childhood obesity, which is linked to future health issues such as PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).

Adolescence

During adolescence, awareness and education are vital. Young girls must be guided about:

  • Menstrual hygiene

  • Iron deficiency and anaemia

  • Managing heavy menstrual bleeding

Proper nutrition and awareness during this stage lay the foundation for lifelong health.

Puberty and Reproductive Health Education

Adolescents should receive accurate information about reproductive and sexual health. While information is easily accessible online, it is not always reliable.

Guidance from parents, educators, and healthcare professionals is essential to help young women understand:

  • Safe contraception

  • Prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

  • Risks associated with unsafe abortions

Such awareness can prevent long-term complications including infertility and certain cancers.

Reproductive Years

Today, many women focus on building successful careers before planning families. As a result, marriage and childbirth are often delayed beyond the age of 30.

In such situations, women may experience challenges conceiving naturally. Options such as egg freezing at a younger age can provide flexibility for future family planning.

Additionally, health insurance plans covering fertility treatments can help reduce emotional and financial stress.

Menopause

Around the age of 45, the hormone estrogen begins to decline, eventually leading to menopause. This stage may bring physical, emotional, and psychological changes.

However, with the right care, women can continue to lead active and fulfilling lives for decades after menopause.

Helpful strategies include:

  • Hormone replacement therapy (when medically advised)

  • Calcium and vitamin D supplementation

  • Regular exercise

  • Balanced nutrition

These measures help reduce the risk of:

  • Osteoporosis

  • Diabetes

  • Cardiovascular diseases

  • Certain cancers

Prioritising Women’s Health

A healthy woman builds a healthy family and a healthier society. Women must remember that caring for their own health is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

This International Women’s Day, let us encourage women everywhere to prioritise their well-being.

Your health, your strength, your future.
