A new research reveals a growing problem: teenagers are losing sleep to late-night smartphone use. And, this has serious health and academic consequences. These facts came to light through a COP survey. The survey report was released on World Sleep Day, yesterday (March 13).

The survey by COP (Child Online Protection) App, covered 5,000 parents of teens aged 12–18 across major cities. The cities are Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Lucknow. And  a clear trend: smartphones are delaying bedtimes and disrupting sleep quality.

Key Stats:

  • 62% of teens sleep after 11 PM due to smartphone use.

  • 1 in 3 teens spends 2+ hours on screens after dinner.

  • 68% of parents worry about screen addiction affecting sleep.

City Highlights:

  • Mumbai: 68% of teens sleep late; 72% of parents worried.

  • Delhi: 66% sleep after 11 PM; 46% wake up at night to check notifications.

  • Bengaluru: 53% use phones in bed; 74% of parents concerned.

Sandeep Kumar, Founder of COP App, emphasizes:

“Sleep is crucial for teens’ mental and emotional development. Parents often underestimate the impact of late-night screen use. Screen-free bedtime routines are essential.”

Experts warn that blue light and late-night digital stimulation disrupt circadian rhythms. This makes it harder for teens to get restorative sleep. The concern is no longer just a metro-city problem; smaller urban centers like Jaipur, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad are seeing rising anxiety among parents.

As digital wellbeing becomes a priority, World Sleep Day is a reminder: healthy screen habits are key to ensuring teens get the sleep they need for growth, focus, and overall health.
