Marking World Obesity Day today, Rainbow Children’s Hospital launched the Weight Well Clinic. This is a comprehensive childhood obesity and weight management centre at its Marathahalli unit.

The World Obesity Day (March 5) highlights the urgent need for preventive healthcare, early diagnosis, and lifestyle intervention. In India, rapid urbanisation, sedentary lifestyles, increased screen time, and evolving dietary patterns have significantly contributed to rising rates of childhood obesity.

Dedicated Multidisciplinary Clinic for Childhood Weight Management

The Weight Well Clinic was formally inaugurated by Dr Rakshay Shetty, Clinical Director and Pediatric Services Head; Dr Lavenya R P, Consultant Pediatric Gastroenterologist; Dr Tejaswi Sheshadri, Consultant Pediatric Endocrinologist and Lead – Pediatric Diabetes Program & DSD Services; and Dr Piyush Prakash, Unit Head – Marathahalli, in the presence of senior clinicians and hospital leadership.

The launch represents a significant step toward delivering specialised, multidisciplinary care for children dealing with unhealthy weight gain, growth disorders, metabolic complications, and obesity-related health risks.

Significantly, t nearly one in five urban children in India is overweight or obese. This increases their susceptibility to hypertension, fatty liver disease, diabetes, and long-term cardiovascular conditions.

Rising Childhood Obesity and Diabetes Among Indian Children

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lavenya R P noted that childhood obesity and diabetes are no longer conditions limited to adults. “We are witnessing a steady rise in obesity and diabetes among children and adolescents. Nearly one in five urban children today is either overweight or obese, significantly increasing the risk of metabolic complications. Early intervention through personalised, evidence-based care is critical to preventing long-term health consequences,” she said.

She added that the clinic adopts a patient-first, multidisciplinary approach focused on sustainable weight management and improved metabolic health outcomes.

Integrated Care Approach for Long-Term Pediatric Health

The clinic brings together pediatric endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, and child psychologists under one roof. These plans focus on growth monitoring, dietary correction, physical activity guidance, behavioural therapy, and parental education.

Dr Rakshay Shetty emphasises the importance of early intervention, “Obesity is a rapidly growing health concern with serious long-term consequences. Addressing it at a young age is essential. Our specialists collaboratively evaluate each child and develop personalised treatment plans that may include lifestyle modifications, structured exercise, dietary changes, and medications such as Ozempic when clinically indicated. Continuous follow-up and coordinated care help address obesity at its root.”
