Jackfruit (Kathal): A Nutrient-Packed Superfood for Health and Vitality
By Dr Divya Sharad
Not very well known to many, Jackfruit (called Kathal in Hindi) is more than just a delicious tropical fruit—it is a powerhouse of nutrients that promotes overall health. Scientifically known as Artocarpus Heterophyllus, jackfruit grows in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide and can be consumed either raw (as a vegetable) or ripened (as a fruit).
Nutritional Benefits of Jackfruit
Jackfruit is rich in energy, dietary fibers, minerals, and vitamins, while being completely fat-free. It is celebrated for its anti-asthmatic and anti-cancer properties, making it a valuable addition to a healthy diet.
Even the seeds of jackfruit are highly nutritious. Packed with digestible starch, protein, and essential minerals, they are widely used in South Indian recipes. Roasted jackfruit seeds are also a popular, healthy snack.
Energy Boosting and Easily Digestible
Just 100 grams of edible jackfruit bulbs provide 95 calories, making it a natural energy booster. The soft, easily digestible flesh contains simple sugars like fructose and sucrose, which help replenish energy and revitalize the body instantly.
Rich in Vitamins and Antioxidants
Jackfruit is a natural source of Vitamin A, essential for skin health. It also contains flavonoid pigments such as Beta Carotene, Xanthin, Lutein, and Cryptoxanthin Beta, which support antioxidant functions and vision health. These compounds can also help reduce the risk of lung and oral cancers.
Additionally, jackfruit provides Vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system and helps neutralize harmful free radicals. It is also one of the few fruits rich in Beta-Complex vitamins, supporting overall metabolic health.
Mineral-Rich Superfood
Jackfruit is an excellent source of potassium, magnesium, manganese, and iron. Potassium is particularly vital for regulating heart rate and blood pressure, supporting overall cardiovascular health.
Incorporating jackfruit into your diet—whether raw, cooked, or in the form of roasted seeds—can significantly enhance your nutritional intake while keeping your body energized and healthy.
