As the citizens of Mumbai enjoyed Ganeshotsav celebrations, dirtying the city’s beaches in the process, a group of 50 students from ITM Group of Institution’s Eco Club swooped down there for a Clean Beach Drive.

Armed with brooms, gloves and masks, the students cleaned up the beach, filling up around 100 bags with 2,500 kg of garbage they picked up from about 800 metres stretch at Dadar Shivaji Park. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials provided the dumper truck to take the garbage away.

Shivaji Park area is considered as one of the dirtiest places in Mumbai post Ganesh Visarjan.  ITM Kharghar’s Eco Club students have been conducting the clean-up drive here every year with an objective to spread awareness and sensitize the onlookers towards environment protection by right practices.

“It is important to keep in mind our responsibility towards mother earth. We students undertake this activity every year in order to give back to the mother nature and influence others to follow the same,” says Eco Club president Rituraj.

“Ganeshotsav is a wonderful festival and brings in lot of happiness around. People come to these beaches in large numbers for immersions but they fail to collect the leftovers of flowers, decorations and plastic, etc. Through this activity we try to spread awareness about the importance of maintaining cleanliness, and hence keep our environment clean and green,” says Prof Roopam, faculty coordinator, ITM Eco Club.
