Charkhari: Hidden Gem of Bundelkhand
Charkhari is a historic town in Mahoba district, Bundelkhand, located about 160 km from Jhansi on National Highway 76. While often overlooked, Charkhari is rich in history, royal architecture, and cultural heritage. It also makes a perfect stopover for travelers visiting Orchha, Khajuraho, and Panna National Park.
Royal Heritage of Charkhari
I met Maharaja Jayant Singh Ju Deo, the 10th ruler of Charkhari, at Raobagh Palace, the royal family residence. Built almost a century ago, the palace reflects Doric architectural style and sits amid Bundelkhand’s granite terrain.
Charkhari has strong historical links with nearby regions. It is close to Khajuraho, famous for its 10th-century temples, and the Panna diamond mines. The town’s famous Mangalgarh Fort was built in 1734 by the son of Maharaj Chhatrasal Jagat Raj. Over time, Charkhari became a principality after resolving conflicts with local communities.
Explore Charkhari’s Historic Palaces
Charkhari’s old palace showcases classic Islamic-Rajput architecture with a Diwan-e-Khaas for royal meetings and a Diwan-e-Aam for public gatherings. Even after a century, its wooden panels and inlay work remain intact. Visitors can also walk through streets lined with shops, reminiscent of Chandni Chowk in Delhi, and experience the town’s vibrant culture.
Cultural Experiences in Charkhari
During our visit, we met Maharani Urmila Kumari, Jayant’s wife and former mayor of Charkhari. Her hospitality and public service reflect the town’s blend of tradition and modernity.
Charkhari’s rich heritage, royal palaces, and historic forts make it an ideal destination for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and travelers seeking authentic Bundelkhand experiences.
