Newbie singer Anza Prem has come up with her first song Akale. This is her first collaboration with Rakuuth and also the first time when she has written and composed a song. “The track is upbeat and has a slight Indian touch to it. I tried to bring in a feeling of loss to the song through the lyrics. Working with Rakuuth has been amazing,” she says.
Akale is being released tomorrow (June 9, 2022), and will be available to stream on all major digital platforms. Created with a vision to merge different genres, the song embodies melancholic and soulful melodies on a quirky upbeat production, a blend of traditional south Indian sounds with contemporary electronic music. From having signature south Indian folk sounds like Kuthu Drums, Synthesised Flute and Kerala Percussions to elements from the iconic UK garage and Bass music, Akale offers its listeners a very distinctive listening experience.
Hailing from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Anza was brought up in Bahrain. As is the case with most people living in the south of India, Anza too started training in Carnatic music at a very young age.
“I started learning Carnatic music at six and continued till 18, when I took a break from that because of my studies. But, even when I was not learning, I was practicing, especially the Western style, and listening to different genres of music,” says the singer who is adept in both Indian Classical and Western. “I sing both Classical and Western music. I also have a music page on Insta wherein I keep experimenting on different styles and genres,” she adds.
The ample family support made the journey easy. “I am quite passionate about music and want to keep singing always. My parents have always supported my music, and they too want me to pursue it. My brother is also a professional keyboardist,” says Anza, who as a young child, always visualised herself on stage whenever she watched any performance. “I am inspired be each performing artist, you see,” she smiles.
The singer dreams of working in Bollywood one day. “Hopefully, opportunities will come up, but until then I am happy to be in Indie and pop music space,” she says.
Other than singing, Anza is an avid dancer and a fashion enthusiast. “I’ve been trying to learn more about fashion and makeup for few years now,” she says.
