My Mute Girlfriend Book Review: A Riveting Love Story Beyond First Impressions

Rajkumari Sharma Tankha

The idiom “Never judge a book by its cover” fits My Mute Girlfriend (Srishti Publications) perfectly.

I must confess, when I first received the book from Himanshu Rai with a request to review it, I wasn’t particularly impressed. The cover looked too filmi, almost artificial. As someone who is a voracious reader, I usually begin a book the moment it reaches me—but this one, I set aside for later.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

When I finally picked it up, I simply couldn’t put it down. I ended up reading it almost in one go. Yes, it is that riveting.

A Love Story That Balances Emotion and Reality

The author does full justice to the central love story while also touching upon several important social issues. What stands out is that while he acknowledges the darker aspects, he doesn’t let the narrative drown in negativity.

Take, for instance, the protagonist Rohan Verma’s infatuation with Navya during his school days. The author presents it with sensitivity, without turning it into obsession or unhealthy behaviour—something we often see in real-life news stories.

Similarly, the theme of inter-caste relationships is explored through Rohan’s sister and her relationship with Anuj. Instead of focusing on conflict and societal backlash, the story offers a more hopeful and positive resolution.

A Nostalgic Journey Through College Life

One of the book’s biggest strengths is its relatability—especially for young readers. The story, set against the backdrop of college life, beautifully captures classroom moments, hostel experiences, friendships, and first love.

The narrative begins with Rohan, a telecom professional in Meerut, who receives an unexpected message from his college girlfriend Vaidehi—someone who had mysteriously stopped talking to him during their engineering days at RK College, Jabalpur.

Before he can respond, fate intervenes—his phone gets damaged.

What follows is a journey down memory lane, as Rohan revisits his past—his friendship with Vaidehi, his earlier feelings for Navya, and the unanswered questions that linger.

Why did Vaidehi suddenly cut off all contact? What really happened?

When Rohan finally meets her again, he is faced with a life-altering truth.

The rest—you’ll have to discover for yourself.

Strong Characters, Simple Narrative

Written in the first person, the book successfully brings out the nuances of various characters—from family members to friends in school and college.

While some scenes may feel a bit plain and certain dialogues somewhat ordinary, the emotional depth of the story keeps the reader engaged.

A Refreshing Absence of Negativity

What I personally liked most about the book is its refreshing take on human nature.

There are no exaggerated villains or over-the-top negative characters. Instead, the story reflects the inherent goodness in people—a belief I strongly resonate with. Not every story needs darkness to make an impact.

Scope for Improvement

That said, the book could have benefited from tighter editing. Grammatical and spelling errors appear at several places and occasionally disrupt the reading flow.

Conclusion

My Mute Girlfriend is a heartfelt, engaging read that proves first impressions can be misleading. With its relatable characters, emotional storytelling, and positive undertone, it is especially appealing to young readers and anyone nostalgic about their college days.
