 Kerala Tourism Boosts Travel with Green Carpet Initiative, Spice Route Revival and New Adventure Experiences

Kerala, popularly known as Kerala and often called God’s Own Country, continues to strengthen its position as one of India’s most sought-after travel destinations. In recent years, the Kerala Tourism department has introduced several innovative initiatives aimed at offering new travel experiences for both domestic and international tourists.

Among the most notable initiatives are the Green Carpet Initiative, the Spice Route Revival Project, and the internationally acclaimed Kochi-Muziris Biennale.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism in Kerala

The Green Carpet Initiative, the first programme of its kind in the state, focuses on creating a sustainable destination management system through partnerships and community participation. The project encourages environmentally responsible tourism practices while enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Meanwhile, the Spice Route Revival Project aims to reconnect Kerala’s southwestern coast with historic trade routes linking India and Europe, highlighting the region’s rich maritime and cultural heritage.

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale, an internationally recognised contemporary art festival, has also played a major role in attracting global art enthusiasts to the state.

Rise in Tourist Arrivals

Kerala Tourism’s strategic marketing and promotional campaigns have resulted in a steady rise in tourist arrivals.

According to official data:

  • Foreign tourist arrivals increased by 5.61% in September 2016 compared to September 2015.

  • Domestic tourist arrivals rose by 6.01% during the same period.

Tourism revenue also witnessed a significant boost. In 2015, foreign exchange earnings reached ₹6,949.88 crore, registering an 8.61% increase compared to the previous year.

The total revenue from tourism, including both direct and indirect earnings, touched ₹26,689.63 crore in 2015, marking a 7.25% growth over the previous year.

Kerala Tourism Roadshow in New Delhi

Encouraged by the positive response from travellers, the tourism department organised a roadshow in New Delhi, led by K. P. Nandkumar.

The event showcased new tourism initiatives, attractions and travel experiences in Kerala and featured vibrant cultural performances by artists from the southern state.

Adventure Tourism and Nature Experiences

Kerala Tourism is also expanding its adventure tourism offerings through programmes organised by NATVENTURE.

These programmes highlight Kerala’s diverse landscapes, including:

  • Wildlife sanctuaries

  • Hill stations

  • Beaches

  • Backwaters

Adventure enthusiasts can enjoy activities such as:

  • Trekking

  • Camping

  • Rock climbing

  • Jungle tours

  • Wildlife safaris

  • Bird watching

  • Cycling

  • Kayaking and canoeing

By combining sustainable tourism, cultural experiences and adventure travel, Kerala Tourism continues to attract travellers from around the world while promoting responsible tourism practices.
