Cancer Survival Story: A Personal Journey of Strength, Treatment and Hope

…and the world came crashing down.

“The FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) report is positive. Your wife has cancer.”

Years later, I still remember how those words were delivered to us at Holy Family Hospital in 2006—with unsettling ease. Perhaps it was professional detachment. But what followed in the months and years ahead restored our faith in the doctor-patient bond, thanks to the compassionate doctors who stood by us through the journey.

A Diagnosis That Changes Everything

When I recently read about Sonali Bendre being diagnosed with cancer, it took me back to those difficult days.

After sending our seven-year-old daughter to school and feeding our 14-month-old baby, my wife and I would head to Indraprastha Apollo Hospital for treatment. What followed was a long and exhausting journey—surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and endless follow-ups over nearly two years.

Cancer treatment is not just physically draining—it tests you emotionally, mentally, and financially.

The Power of Willpower and Support

Yet, what makes this journey bearable is the strength of the patient.

“I want to live for my kids and won’t give up,” my wife would often say.

That determination made all the difference.

We were fortunate to be surrounded by incredible doctors—true healers—who treated not just the illness but also our fears. Alongside them were ever-smiling nurses, supportive friends, caring relatives, and even kind-hearted strangers like the auto drivers from Mayur Vihar who waited for hours during hospital visits.

More than a decade later, my wife is healthy—and I remain deeply grateful to everyone who helped us through.

When Public Stories Feel Personal

So when Sonali Bendre shared her diagnosis, her words resonated deeply:

“Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball…”

Her journey, supported by her family including filmmaker Goldie Behl, reflects the same strength and resilience that countless families experience while battling cancer.

Understanding Cancer: Causes and Challenges

Cancer is often described as the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. One of the biggest challenges is that many cancers remain undetected until advanced stages.

When cancer spreads to other parts of the body—a process known as metastasis—it becomes more complex to treat. This spread occurs through blood or the lymphatic system, affecting multiple organs.

Advances in Cancer Treatment and Immunotherapy

The good news is that medical science is evolving rapidly. New treatments aim not only to prolong survival but also to improve quality of life.

One such breakthrough is immunotherapy, which uses the body’s immune system to fight cancer.

According to Dr Pradeep Mahajan of StemRx Bioscience Solutions Pvt Ltd:

“Immune cells like dendritic cells and natural killer cells can be trained to target cancer cells, creating long-term anti-tumour immunity.”

Technologies such as CAR-T cell therapy, monoclonal antibodies, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are also transforming cancer care globally.

What is Metastatic Cancer?

Explaining further, Dr Adwait Gore notes:

  • Metastasis occurs when cancer spreads from its original site
  • High-grade cancer indicates aggressive disease
  • Even when cancer spreads, it is named after its origin (e.g., breast cancer spreading to bones remains breast cancer)
  • Proper diagnosis involves Tumour, Node, and Metastasis (TNM) staging

Hope, Strength and Moving Forward

As Sonali Bendre continues her treatment, there is hope—because cancer journeys, though difficult, are not without victories.

My wife’s story is one such victory.

Cancer may be a dreaded word, but it is not the end. With early detection, medical advances, emotional resilience, and strong support systems, survival is possible.

There are no full stops in life—and there shouldn’t be.

Every cancer journey is a story of courage, faith, and perseverance. And as long as there is hope, there is always a way forward.
