This World Stroke Day, we tell few ways in which you can prevent the risk of stroke
Keep blood pressure in check
High blood pressure is a huge factor, raising the stroke risk many times, in both men and women. So monitor your blood pressure and, if it is elevated, get it treated. The ideal blood pressure is less than 120/80, but 140/90 is appropriate too. To achieve normal blood pressure reduce the intake of salt in your diet – consume not more than about a half teaspoon a day. Also, keep away from burgers, cheese, ice creams etc all of which increase cholesterol. Eat fresh fruits and veggies and go for whole grains flour. Also, make exercise a part of you daily routine, and quit smoking.
Maintain your body weight
Obesity increases the risk of stroke. But please do not stress over achieving ideal body mass index (BMI) of 25 or less, rather work with your doctor to create a personal weight loss strategy.
One good way to lose weight is eat less and exercise more. Always keep in mind that walking is the safest exercise you can adopt. When you exercise, stop at the level at which you’re breathing hard, but you can still talk. Other simple ways include taking to stairs instead of elevators.
Drink in moderation
Drinking a little alcohol, such as an average of one peg per day, is okay. In any case, have no more than one glass of alcohol in a day.
Pay attention to heart palpitations
If you have symptoms such as heart palpitations or shortness of breath, it’s time to meet your doctor.
Treat diabetes
Having high blood sugar damages blood vessels over time, making clots more likely to form inside them. So, keep your blood sugar under control through proper diet and exercise.
