Located on the Red Line of the Delhi Metro in Sahibabad Industrial area of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, Major Mohit Sharma (Rajendra Nagar) Metro Station is named after Major Mohit Sharma who was martyred in the Kupwara Operation on March 21, 2009.
Major Sharma’s unit was deployed in the Kupwara district of J&K and was engaged in operations against the terrorists on a frequent basis. Based on the information received from the intelligence about the infiltration attempt by some terrorists in Kupwara district, the security forces decided to launch a search and destroy operation on March 21, 2009. Major Sharma was tasked to lead the Bravo Assault Team against the infiltrating terrorists in dense Haphruda forest. Maj Sharma, along with his commandos, reached the suspected area as planned and soon made contact with the infiltrators. He alerted his scouts, on observing suspicious movement, but the terrorists fired at the troops from three directions indiscriminately. In heavy exchange of fire, four commandos got wounded and with complete disregard to his personal safety, Major Mohit Sharma crawled and recovered two soldiers to safety.
Unnerved Major Sharma continued the operation and threw grenades, killing two terrorists. During the exchange of fire, Major Sharma got hit in the chest. Despite seriously wounded, he kept directing his commandos to foil the attempt of the terrorists to escape. In a rare display of raw courage and determination, he charged at the terrorists, killing two in close combat. Later, he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom fighting. Major Mohit Sharma was given the nation’s highest peace time gallantry award, Ashok Chakra for his act of conspicuous gallantry, unyielding fighting spirit and supreme sacrifice.
