Artworks that explore intrinsic connection between humans & elemental forces

Rajkumari Sharma Tankha

A self-taught artist, Divyaman Singh credits his becoming an artist to his mother. “My innate passion for art was fueled and ignited by my mother. She instilled in me a profound appreciation for the beauty of expression through painting, serving as my guiding light from an early age. Her influence laid the foundation for my artistic endeavours, shaping my perspective and nurturing my creative spirit. Alongside me now stands my wife, a constant source of motivation and inspiration,” he says.
Deeply immersed in the world of art for the past decade, primarily focusing on oil on canvas creations, Singh is showcasing his new series of artworks at the exhibition The Divine Elements Vol-I,’ at Rang Mirage Art Gallery. The show, curated by Shahzada Khurram, is a unique exploration of the cosmic and the earthly realms through the lens of artistic expression.

So whats The Divine Elements Vol I  all about. Why volume 1, do you plan a sequel anytime soon?
The Divine Elements Vol I is an exploration of the intrinsic connection between humanity and the elemental forces that shape our world. Through my artwork, I delve into the profound relationship we share with the natural elements—earth, air, water, and fire—depicting their power, beauty, and significance in our lives.
The choice of Volume I signifies that this exhibition is the beginning of a series dedicated to exploring this theme. Each volume will delve deeper into different aspects of this relationship, offering new perspectives and insights. As for a sequel, indeed, I’m already planning The Divine Elements Vol II scheduled for July at Visual Art Gallery in India Habitat Center, New Delhi. The second volume will present a distinct body of work, focusing on the theme of the coexistence of human life with these elements. It aims to illustrate how we are intricately interconnected with them, and how our existence depends on maintaining a harmonious balance.
Through both the volumes, my intention is to convey a message of reverence and responsibility towards our environment. I hope to inspire reflection on our role as stewards of the Earth and the importance of preserving the delicate equilibrium that sustains life on our planet.

Share with us your early life
I hail from the heartland of Bihar, born into the rich heritage of a zamindar family in Chaugain Estate, nestled within the Buxar district. My upbringing paints a tapestry of tradition, where life unfolded amidst the rustic charm of village living. It was a world steeped in cultural richness, where every dawn carried echoes of ancestral legacies and every sunset whispered tales of generations past.
My artistic journey finds its roots in these formative years, where the rhythms of rural life and the vibrant hues of tradition became the canvas upon which my creativity flourished. The simplicity of village existence taught me to appreciate the beauty in the mundane, to find inspiration in the everyday sights and sounds that surrounded me.
However, it was my venture to Indore for schooling that marked a pivotal chapter in my artistic evolution. The bustling cityscape introduced me to new perspectives, broadening my horizons and infusing fresh vigour into my creative pursuits. It was amidst the urban bustle that I discovered the power of fusion, blending the rustic charm of my upbringing with the cosmopolitan flair of city life.
In essence, my upbringing in the zamindar family of Chaugain Estate, coupled with my later experiences in Indore, has woven a colourful tapestry of influences that continue to shape my artistic journey. Each stroke of my brush, each note of my melody, carries echoes of my roots while embracing the ever-changing landscape of inspiration that surrounds me.

His relentless pursuit of artistic expression, coupled with his unwavering commitment to his vision, serves as a powerful example of passion and dedication in the face of adversity.

Do you do any other job or are you a full-time artist? Can a person sustain himself by just being a fulltime artist?
As a full-time artist, I dedicate myself entirely to my craft, channeling my energy and passion into creating meaningful and impactful artwork. While some artists may pursue other jobs or sources of income to supplement their artistic endeavors, others, like myself, choose to devote themselves entirely to their art.
Sustaining oneself as a full-time artist can be challenging, as it often requires navigating a competitive and unpredictable market while also managing the financial aspects of one’s career. However, with dedication, perseverance, and strategic planning, it is indeed possible to make a living solely through art.
One key factor in achieving success as a full-time artist is establishing multiple streams of income, which may include selling artwork through galleries, exhibitions, and online platforms, as well as securing commissions, teaching workshops, or licensing one’s work for various purposes.
Building a strong and consistent body of work, cultivating a loyal following of collectors and supporters, and actively engaging with the art community are also essential aspects of sustaining oneself as a full-time artist. Additionally, developing business skills, such as marketing, networking, and financial management, can help artists navigate the professional landscape and maximize their earning potential.
While the path of a full-time artist may present its challenges, it also offers unparalleled opportunities for creative fulfillment, self-expression, and personal growth. For those who are passionate about their art and committed to pursuing their dreams, the rewards of a career in the arts can be immeasurable.

How many hours in a day do you paint? Which medium do you specialise in and which one do you like the most?
As a full-time artist, I devote a significant portion of my day to painting, typically spending several hours immersed in my creative process. The exact number of hours can vary depending on factors such as inspiration, project deadlines, and other commitments, but I strive to maintain a consistent practice to nurture my artistic growth and productivity.
In terms of specialisation, I focus primarily on painting, although I also enjoy exploring other mediums such as drawing and mixed media. Within painting, my specialisation lies in contemporary abstract art, where I find freedom and expression through the manipulation of color, texture, and form.
I enjoy the tactile qualities of traditional mediums like oil and watercolor. Ultimately, my choice of medium reflects both practical considerations and personal preference, allowing me to fully realise my artistic vision and create compelling works that resonate with viewers.

What are your other interests and hobbies?
Outside of my artistic pursuits, I have a diverse range of interests and hobbies that enrich my life and inspire my creativity. Here are a few:
I love delving into books across various genres, from fiction and poetry to philosophy and psychology. Reading not only expands my knowledge but also sparks new ideas and perspectives that often find their way into my artwork.
Spending time outdoors, whether hiking in the mountains, strolling through parks, or simply observing the beauty of nature, rejuvenates my spirit and fuels my creativity. I find solace and inspiration in the tranquility of natural landscapes and the wonders of the wilderness.
Music is a constant source of inspiration and motivation for me. I enjoy listening to a wide range of genres, from classical and jazz to electronic and indie, finding resonance in the melodies, rhythms, and emotions conveyed through music.
Exploring new places and immersing myself in different cultures broadens my perspective and stimulates my creativity. Whether it’s discovering local art scenes, sampling exotic cuisines, or simply soaking in the sights and sounds of a new destination, travel invigorates my senses and enriches my artistic practice.
I find joy in experimenting with flavors and ingredients in the kitchen, creating delicious meals to nourish both body and soul. Cooking allows me to express my creativity in a different medium, blending colors, textures, and flavors to craft culinary works of art.
Maintaining a balanced mind and body is essential for my creative process. I incorporate yoga and meditation into my daily routine to cultivate mindfulness, reduce stress, and enhance mental clarity, thereby fostering a deeper connection with my artistic intuition.
These interests and hobbies not only provide a source of relaxation and enjoyment but also serve as valuable sources of inspiration and creative fuel, influencing and enriching my artistic practice in profound ways.
