The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 paves way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems in the country. It aims for uiversalisation of eEducation from pre-school to secondary level with 100 per cent GER in school education by 2030.

Some of the highlights of NEP 2020 are:

The 5+3+3+4 school curriculum with 12 years of schooling and three years of anganwadi/ pre-schooling.

There is no rigid separation between academic streams, extracurricular, vocational streams in schools. Vocational education to start from class 6 with internships.

Teaching up to at least Grade 5 to be in mother tongue/ regional language.

GER in higher education to be raised to 50 per cent by 2035 — Rs 3.5 crore seats to be added in higher education.

There will be a common entrance test for entry to a college. Higher Education curriculum will have flexibility of subjects, with multiple entry/ exit points. Also Academic Bank of Credits will be established to facilitate Transfer of Credits.

A National Research Foundation will be established to foster a strong research culture.

There will be a single regulator (merger of UGC and AICTE) to control higher education with four separate verticals for different functions. Affiliation system will be phased out in 15 years with graded autonomy to colleges.

A National Educational Technology Forum will be created to facilitate increased use of technology.

A Gender Inclusion Fund will be set up, as also Special Education Zones for disadvantaged regions and groups.

A National Institute for Pali, Persian and Prakrit, Indian Institute of Translation and Interpretation will be set up.
