You can find your inspiration in your past, as Sarah Ban does in her book – Something More- excavating your authentic being. To do so, you need to revisit earlier years.
The acronym DICE – will be helpful in the following exercise:
D – Dig down.
I – investigate what you have unearthed.
C – Chose what is of value.
E- Explore and expand.
Find yourself a comfortable place and give yourself the luxury of 30 minutes or longer to take a trip into your past. For some, this may feel frightening, but even if you had a difficult childhood it is possible to find nuggets of rare beauty in the midst of the garbage. The child you were is still in the heart of you and needs to be acknowledged, incorporated into a creative adult you have become.
Take you mind back to when you were 7, 11, 14 and 18 years old. You can just do one age now and return to the others at another time.
For each age ask yourself the following questions. Make notes to help you recall later:
- Where did you live?
- Who did you love with?
- Who made you happy?
- What made you sad?
- Did you have a special friend/s?
- What was the high point of your day?
- What was the high point of your week?
- Was there anything happening that made you different from your school friends?
- If a stranger met the child you were at this age, how would they describe you?
Come back to the present and reflect on the following questions:
- What did you learn at that age that is still useful to your today?
- Are there things you used to enjoy that you chose to do now?
- Did you unearth anything that surmised you?
If you have remembered talents that have become rusty, it is now time to resurrect them and expand your creativity?
Embrace the child you were then, who did the best he could with the knowledge he had then. Celebrate his arrival and congratulate yourself for having come so far.
