To celebrate 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary and 100 years of Charkha, Sankalp for Khadi organised Signature for Khadi at The Ashok Hotel in the National Capital recently. The event also witnessed a first-of-its-kind fashion show where bunkars (weavers) from seven Indian states exhibited and showcased their exclusive craft.

The main outline of the initiative was to pledge for monumentalising khadi from The Freedom Fabric of the Nation to Fashion Fabric of the Nation. The initiative was announced in the presence of senior RSS leader and chief guest  Indresh Kumar. Also present on the occasion were politicians, sportsmen, diplomats, bureaucrats, artists and socialites with the prominent names being senior politician Salman Khurshid, BJP vice president Shyam Jaju, wrestler The Great Khali, Femina Miss India 2019 runner-up Sanjana Vij, tarot card reader Poonam Sethi and fashion designer Amit Talwar.

The evening presented Roots of India, a fashion show of khadi and handloom fabrics from the states of Odisha, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Nagaland to empower and commemorate the sashaktikaran (empowerment) of bunkars. The enthralling show gave a platform to these bunkars to present their creative genius.

“Khadi fabric and weavers behind the Charkha inspired me to start this initiative. Sankalp for Khadi aims to provide these weavers an improved and sustainable employment under the national project, Make in India,” shared Founder President, Sankalp for Khadi Paridhi Sharma.

Sankalp for Khadi also introduced Gandhi Smriti Chinh Awards 2019 to acknowledge efforts of young enthusiasts who have upheld the Gandhian principles of Equality, Women Empowerment, Education, Swachh Bharat, Khadi and Non Violence. The campaign is now being aimed to be moved to Sabarmati in Gujarat, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi to reignite awareness and importance of khadi in October.
